摘要： A method and apparatus for exercising access control over television programs using a parental control interface that has different functions are provided. The method requires a password to enter into a master mode for obtaining unlimited access to all the functions of the parental control interface. Once in the master mode, the user may enter a criterion for blocking a television program from being viewed or recorded or the user can override an already blocked television program. Once a master password is entered, the system is in a Master Password mode until the TV is turned off, the user exits the VChip Plus+ mode, or a certain time delay expires. If a user, not in the master mode, attempts to watch or record a program that meets the blocking criterion and the program does not meet the overriding criterion, a prompt is provided to the user to enter the password. Upon entering a correct password, the program is unblocked.

摘要： A system capable of automatically recording television programs broadcast on different cable television channels. The system includes a cable box, a video recorder and a cable programmer. The consumer enters sets of channel, date, time-of-day and length commands ('CDTL information') or compressed codes representative of such sets of commands into the video recorder. From each set of commands, subsets of date, time-of-day and length ('DTL information') are stored in the video recorder's memory. At the same time or shortly thereafter, a subset of channel, date and time-of-day commands ('CDT information') from the same set of commands is transmitted to the cable programmer. The cable programmer and video recorder have independent control circuits to control certain aspects of the recording process according to the subsets of commands stored in their memories. The control circuits of the video recorder control the starting and stopping of recording while the control circuits of the cable programmer tune the channel on the cable box. Information is transferred from the video recorder to the cable programmer and from the cable programmer to the cable box via IR links or other remote control technique.

摘要： Digital compressed codes, associated with advertisements enable a user to selectively record additional information, which would be broadcast on a television channel at a later time. The advertisement could be print advertisement or broadcast advertisement on television or radio. The user enters the digital code (I code) (652) associated with an advertisement into a unit with a decoding means (14) which automatically converts the code into CTL (Channel, time and length). The unit within a twenty-four-hour-period activates a VCR (14) to record information on the television channel (18) at the right time for the proper length of time. The decoded channel, time and length information can be communicated directly to a VCR (14), and used by the VCR (14) directly to automatically activate the VCR (14) to record a given television information broadcast corresponding to the communicated channel, time and length. Alternately, the channel, time and length information can be decoded directly in a remote control unit (80) and only start record, stop record and channel selection commands (16) sent to the VCR (14) at the appropriate times. Algorithms for decoding the I codes (652) can be a function of time to ensure security of the decoding method. A method is included for use of the I codes (652) with cable channels.
