    • Apparatus for processing multisheet or manifold business forms assemblies comprises at least one pair of rotary slitters, a male crimping die (30) or punch associated with one of the slitting blades (10, 20) of the pair for rotation therewith, and a female crimping die or punch receptacle associated with the other of the slitting blades (10, 20) for rotation therewith. Upon rotation of the slitters and their associated crimping dies (30), the manifold assembly is concur­rently slit and crimped to produce locks or paper staples (2) in the body of the assembly. These paper staples effectively hold the various sheets of the assembly in registration or alignment during subsequent processing, but readily permit separation of the various sheets of the assembly when desired.

    • An envelope construction includes an outer envelope 14 and a return envelope 22 contained therein. The return envelope 22 has a front sheet and a back sheet, both sheets being provided with marginal edges bonded together except along one edge. The front sheet extends beyond the back sheet at this one edge and has a closure flap 30 provided with an adhesive strip 34 for sealing the return envelope. First and second insert sheets, 18,20, in the nature of a bill and a copy thereof, are arranged inside the outer envelope 14 and are juxtaposed over the back sheet of the return envelope 22. One insert sheet includes an end strip 24 provided with a release agent 28 on its back side which overlies and protects the adhesive strip 34 provided on the closure flap 30 for the front sheet of the return envelope.

    • A carbon security system is provided for a customer using a credit card to get all of the carbons 14, 24, when the customer copy is taken. Security is achieved because all carbons 14, 24, are connected to the customer copy 18 and are removed together with the customer copy. A set made up of the customer copy 18 and all carbons 14, 24, may be folded over so that the carbons 14, 24, are left inside of the folded customer copy 18. A strip of adhesive 40 attached to the top side or underside of the stub retains the folded set together. Thus, there results a very good way for the customer to retain the carbons 14, 24, without getting a mess on his or her hands and without risking fraudulent use of credit card data obtained from the carbons.

    • Modular web processing units (100) may be physically and electrically assembled into clusters to perform various web processes (e.g. the production of paper forms such as invoices, checks, labels, etc.). Each module (100) has a main process driver (12) which is not directly coupled to a web drive mechanism. Rather, the web drive is programme controlled so as to effect the desired web process at controlled displacement intervals along the web. Accordingly, a plurality of successive but different form lengths or depths can be accommodated as the web surface is sequentially processed. A system of such modules (100) can be physically wheeled into position as individual units and electrically connected together by suitable umibilical cords (140) to rapidly configure a desired overall web finishing process. Nevertheless, the entire ensemble of modules performs as though it is a unitary special purpose web processing machine with its various process stations interconnected and synchronized by an electronic «drive shaft*. One of the modular units automatically becomes the master source of process drive pulses for the others and the entire ensemble may be controlled from the control panel (132) of any one of the modules.
