    • A plurality of sets of waveform data and switchover position information indicative of, for each of the sets of waveform data, one or more possible switchover positions in the waveform data are prestored in memory, and one set of waveform data is reproduced in accordance with the passage of time. During reproduction of a first set of waveform data, a second set of waveform data is designated at given timing in response to a user's instruction. Control is performed such that the waveform data to be reproduced is switched from the first set of waveform data over to the second set of waveform data in response to waveform data reproduction timing arriving at one of the possible switchover positions indicated by the switchover position information corresponding to the second set of waveform data. Reproduction of the second set of waveform data is started at the switchover position corresponding to the reproduction timing.

    • In response to detection of a note-on instruction, a CPU (10) assigns a tone generating unit comprising two tone generating channels and sets tone color control data of the assigned tone generating unit into tone generator registers (23). The tone color control data includes a parameter common to the two channels. Once the CPU gives a tone generation start instruction to a tone generator (20), the tone generator accumulates a frequency number common to the two channels to thereby generate a progressive phase common to the two channels. Waveform readout section (112) reads out left-channel and right-channel waveform data from a waveform memory (21) on the basis of the phase and waveform selecting information of the left and right channels. Tone characteristics of the read-out left- and right-channel waveform data are controlled by a characteristic control section on the basis of a characteristic control parameter common to the two channels.

    • Waveform data stored in an external memory (125), like a NAND-type flash memory, are transferred from the external memory to an internal waveform memory (126) via a buffer and read out from the waveform memory to thereby reproduce a tone. Transfer instruction is generated each time data readout from the waveform memory progresses by one page, and the transfer instruction is registered into a transfer queue (521). Thus, in response to the transfer instruction from the queue, the waveform data stored in the external memory are read out on page by page and stored into the waveform memory. The external memory stores therein the waveform data in pages with error correction code attached per page. As the waveform data of a page are transferred from the external memory to the waveform memory, an error is detected using the error correction code, and, if the error is correctable, the error is corrected. If the error is uncorrectable, volume of a tone being generated is rapidly attenuated, or a warning is issued.

For example, the interpolation characteristic can be controlled in accordance with a pitch or tone range so that a filter characteristic to be obtained as the result of the interpolation operation can be prevented from shifting as a pitch or tone range changes. Further, by controlling the interpolation characteristic in correspondence with a specific tone range, such characteristic can be established as to reliably eliminate an aliasing noise.

    • A musical tone signal generating apparatus provides at least a waveform memory (2) which stores a plurality of fundamental waveform data based on three-dimensional coordinate address system having three coordinate axes to which respective musical tone control parameters are assigned respectively.
