摘要： A phase change particulate saline slurry and methods and apparatus are provided for producing phase change particulates saline slurries. In one method for producing phase change particulates saline slurries (300), water and a first set amount of sodium chloride are provided to produce a saline solution (302). The saline solution is cooled to a set temperature (304). A selected percentage of chunk ice is broken into ice particles having a small size (306). Next a second set amount of sodium chloride is added and distributed for smoothing of the ice particles (308). If the slurry is to be used later, the slurry is stored in a highly insulated container while maintaining low level of slurry mixing for maintaining optimum slurry fluidity as indicated in block (310). The total saline solution concentrations resulting from the total of the first set amount and the second set amount of added sodium chloride are preferably in the range of about 0.5 % to 6.0 %. The loadings or percentage of ice particles are preferably in the range of 5 % to 50 % and have a size of about 1 mm or less and a generally smooth shape.

摘要： A sensor assembly (50) for detecting ice crystal formation on a heat exchange surface in an ice-making machine (12) comprises at least one microphone (100) monitoring the sound made by a rotating blade assembly within the ice-making machine during ice slurry formation. A filter (104) filters the output of the microphone to remove background noise. A comparator (106) receives the output of the filter and compares the filtered microphone output with a threshold to determine if the filtered microphone output signifies ice crystal formation on the heat exchange surface. The operation of the ice-making machine (12) can then be adjusted in a manner to allow the formed ice crystals to be removed from the heat exchange surface.

摘要： An ice-making machine (20) comprises an evaporator (36), a compressor (54) and a condenser (74) connected in circuit with a supply line (184, 186, 188) and a return line (189). During a freeze cycle, refrigerant is supplied via the compressor (54) and the condenser (74) along the supply line to the evaporator (36) and returned via the return line to the compressor (54). A pressure regulator (157) is connected in circuit with the return line. The pressure regulator (157) is operable during a harvest cycle to limit flow of the refrigerant through the return line, whereby the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant in the evaporator (36) increases to thereby assist in defrosting the evaporator to harvest ice. A receiver (40) is connected in circuit with the compressor (54), the condenser (74) and the evaporator (36) and is operable during the freeze cycle to direct the refrigerant flow to the evaporator (36) via the supply line. The receiver (40) is either operable during the harvest cycle to-direct the refrigerant to the evaporator (36) via a vapor line (191), or is inoperable during the harvest cycle such that the refrigerant bypasses the receiver and the condenser such that the refrigerant flows from the compressor (54) to the evaporator (36) during the harvest cycle.
