    • An ink/air separator for an ink jet printer has one or more plates (77, 79, 81, 83) over which an ink/air mixture can spread. Preferably there is more than one plate, and the mixture overflows from one plate to the next. Preferably adjacent plates are spaced so that as the mixture passes between two plates it contacts the surface above it as well as the surface below it. The plates may be separated by a gap of 10 mm or less, e.g. a gap of 2 mm to 5 mm, where they overlap Preferably some or all of the plate surfaces contacted by the mixture are roughened. Interaction between the ink/air mixture and the plate surface tends to slow the flow of very small air bubbles and encourage them to accumulate and/or merge, so that they separate from the ink more quickly than individual small bubbles. The ink/air separator may be connected in the path of unused ink returned from the gutter (27) of a continuous ink jet printer to an ink tank (39), or may be placed inside the ink tank (39).

    • An inkjet printing apparatus (3) carries out printing by moving an inkjet head (19) and printing paper (WP) relative to each other. The inkjet head (19) has a plurality of nozzles for discharging ink droplets. The apparatus (3) includes a feed pipe (25) connected to each nozzle of the inkjet head (19) for feeding ink thereto, an ink feed control valve (27) mounted on the feed pipe (25) for controlling circulation of the ink, a cap (29) for blocking the plurality of nozzles of the inkjet head (19), a decompression device (39) for decompressing an inside of the cap (29), decompression piping (31,35) for connecting the cap (29) and the decompression device (39), a decompression control valve (41) mounted on the decompression piping (35) for controlling communication between the cap (29) and the decompression device (39), and a controller (45). The controller (45) moves the cap (29) into contact with the inkjet head (19) to block all the nozzles of the inkjet head (19), then closes the ink feed control valve (27) and the decompression control valve (39), operates the decompression device (39), thereafter opens the decompression control valve (39) to decompress the inside of the cap (29), opens the ink feed control valve (27), closes the ink feed control valve (27) upon lapse of a predetermined time thereafter, then closes the decompression control valve (41), stops the decompression device (39), and separates the cap (29) from the inkjet head (19).
