    • An object of the present invention is to provide an image output apparatus having the function of adjusting the quality of an input image according to the intended purpose while avoiding the missing of the high-frequency component taking place due to the scanning of the input image. The output target image 101 is formed on the write surface of the optical write type spatial optical modulator 103 by means of the input optical system 102. The input image resulting from the light beam 108 which forms an image on the write surface of the optical write type spatial optical modulator 103 is modulated by the modulation characteristics of the spatial optical modulators controlled by the optical modulation characteristic control circuit 105 included in the drive circuit 104 and appears on the read surface of the optical write type liquid crystal spatial optical modulator. This modulated image is readout by the light beam 109 for forming an output image and is formed as the output image 107 on the final output surface of the apparatus as a whole by means of the output optical system 106. The deterioration of input image information is corrected and the quality of the output image can be adjusted according to the intended purpose.

    • A machine capable of producing photographic colour prints, both from images captured on film and from digitally encoded images, consists essentially in a conventional machine as used to make colour prints from images on film, also comprising a one-line cathode ray tube (7 or 7a or 7b) positioned along the path followed by a strip of light-sensitive paper (31) from a supply roll (3) to a set of chemical treatment baths (60), preceding or following the printing surface (29), of which the projecting head (71) generates a pencil-thin line comprising a high number of pixels in a notably broad range of colours. The single lines are emitted gradually and in ordered succession by the projecting head (71), impacting on a corresponding length of the light-sensitive paper (31) as it advances across the head and thus generating an image of high definition and chromatic fidelity directly on the light-sensitive surface.

    • An image processing apparatus includes a light modulator (10), an analog writing system (11) for analogously writing an image of an original in the light modulator, a digital reading system (13) for digitally reading the written image out of the light modulator, a processing section (15) for processing the read image data, a digital writing system (14) for digitally writing the processed image in the light modulator, and an analog reading system (12) for analogously reading the image written on the light modulator. The light modulator includes a photoconductive material, a liquid crystal layer laminated on the photoconductive material, and a pair of electrodes sandwiching the photoconductive material and the liquid crystal layer. The liquid crystal layer can provide a storage function so as to enable the reading and writing of the image from the same direction.

    • A system for adjusting the density or contrast of a photographic print includes a projection lens system (18) for projecting an image from a negative (10) onto photosensitive paper (20). A matrix array (24) of light valves, such as liquid crystal display elements, is interposed in the optical path in front of the print paper (20) and transmissivity of the individual LCD elements is controlled to provide an LCD mask to control the intensity and/or color of the light falling on the print paper (20). Preferably, a television camera (16) is used with a beam splitter (14) to provide a real-time image of either the LCD mask (24) or the combined image of the mask (24) and negative (10) to allow operator-selected adjustments in the mask (24) to be viewed as they are made. In printing black and white photos on multicontrast paper, the color transmissivity of the LCD elements is adjusted on an element-by-element basis to provide a localized adjustment of the contrast range of the print paper. Density and contrast can be simultaneously adjusted by controlling both the color balance and overall transmissivity of the LCD elements.
