    • A fiber optic cable (40) includes at least one bundle (42) having a plurality of non-tight buffered optical fibers (44) and a binder element (40) for maintaining the integrity of the bundle. The binder element may be, for example, a binder thread. The fiber optic cable is a dry cable excluding a grease or a grease-like composition being in contact with the at least one bundle. The fiber optic cable also includes a separation layer (45) for inhibiting adhesion between the bundles of optical fibers and the cable jacket (50). In another embodiment, a fiber optic cable includes a plurality of optical fibers and a binder element forming at least one bundle. The at least one bundle is surrounded by an armour layer and the fiber optic cable excludes a cable jacket within the armour layer.

    • A fiber optic cable that includes an armor layer having inner and outer surfaces and defining a passageway therethrough, a protective jacket surrounding the armor layer, a plurality of optical fibers extending lengthwise through the passageway, and a water swellable element for inhibiting water migration through the passageway. The water swellable element can be a water swellable layer on at least one of the inner and outer surfaces of the armor layer and/or a water swellable yarn extending through the passageway. The fiber optic cable is preferably tubeless, i.e., free of buffer tubes. In instances in which a water swellable layer is on the inner surface of the armor layer, the optical fibers are capable of contacting the water swellable layer. Alternatively, in instances in which the fiber optic cable includes water swellable yarns but not a water swellable layer on the inner surface of the armor layer, the optical fibers are capable of contacting the armor layer and, more particularly, the plastic coating of the armor layer. The fiber optic cable can exhibit shape retention whereby the fiber optic cable can retain a bent shape.

    • The present invention relates to a method for producing an optofibre cable, and to an optofibre cable produced in accordance with the method. Optofibre cables are used for transmitting optosignals and will often include a plurality of optofibres housed in tubular elements or pipes enclosed in a protective casing. With the intention of simplifying manufacture and handling of optofibre cables and with the intention of preventing the ingress of water into such cables and to connected components, there has been produced an optofibre cable which includes one or more tubular elements (3) that contain one or more optofibres (4), a central strain relief (1) bonded to the optofibre-containing pipes with a glue layer (8), an intermediate porous filling material (7), all enclosed in a protective casing in the form of a pipe (6) or the like. The purpose of the porous filling material is to fill the space between the pipes, the glue surface on the strain relief and the casing so as to fixate the pipes around the strain relief and to make the optofibre cable watertight along its length. The use of porous filling material results in low material consumption and therewith an optofibre cable of low weight.
