    • An apparatus is provided that is useful for effecting liquid-liquid extraction by contacting a first liquid medium with a substantially immiscible heavier second liquid medium. Each mixer-settler unit includes a vertically extending settling tank having a top and a bottom with an outlet for the first liquid medium near the top and an outlet for the second liquid medium near the bottom. An elongated extraction column extends generally vertically upwardly through the settling tank bottom. The extraction column is open at its top with the top of the extraction column below the top of the settling tank. A diverter surrounds and extends downwardly along a top portion of the extraction column. The diverter has a closed top and an open bottom with an annulus being between the diverter and the portion the extraction column surrounded by the diverter. The dispersion flows from the pumping and mixing means upwardly through the extraction column and out its top. The dispersion then flows downwardly from the top of the extraction column through the annulus between the diverter and extraction column and exits the open bottom of the diverter into the settling tank.

    • A liquid-spraying system comprises an elongated tubular conduit means adapted for the flow of liquid therethrough, a tube wall of liquid-tight, .elastically resilient material, liquid feeding means connected to one of the ends of the conduit means, closing means for at least substantially closing off the other end of the conduit means, and a large number of perforations of substantially circular cross sectional area through the tube wall and leading from the conduit interior to outside of the external tube wall surface.
      The tube wall is made of a liquid-tight, elastically resilient material which is non-swelling in contact with water of a temperature of 60°C or higher and with organic extraction solvents, and wherein the perforations are uniform and have an outlet of at most about 0.8 mm 2 , being small enough to produce capillary forces between water and the material of the surrounding tube wall sufficient to substantially prevent water filling the conduit interior from flowing out of the perforations while the water in the conduit interior is under ambient pressure, but being sufficiently large and of such configuration as to permit ejection of the liquid jet substantially free from trickling, when the liquid in the conduit interior is under excess pressure at least of the magnitude derived from a water main.

    • An apparatus for effecting liquid-liquid contact between an aqueous liquid medium and an organic liquid medium comprises a chamber for holding a body of each of the media having an agitator therein. One or both of the media are supplied to a mixing zone around the agitator. By means of the agitator a dispersion band is formed with a free space above and/or below it which is devoid of baffles. A layer of disengaged lighter medium forms above the dispersion band and a layer of disengaged heavier medium below it, at least one of these layers extending into the or a corresponding free space. Disengaged lighter and/or heavier medium is recovered from the corresponding layer thereof at the same rate that it is supplied to the mixing zone.

    • A liquid-liquid solvent extraction system comprises a mixing stage which includes a mixing device (10) for creating a dispersion of the two liquid phases followed by a residence chamber (14) designed to enhance contacting and mass transfer between the solute and solvent phases. The separating stage includes a drop size conditioning device (15) which establishes a drop size in the discontinuous liquid phase of the dispersion which can be easily separated from the continuous liquid phase in the succeeding settling device (16). The conditioning device (15) also acts to reduce entrainment of the solvent phase in the solute phase during separation of the phases. The settling device (16) may contain a series of baffles to reduce the time required for phase separation and to reduce entrainment of the solvent phase in the solute phase.
      The system is used to extract metal ions such as uranium, copper, cobalt, nickel, and vanadium from aqueous process streams containing dilute concentrations of such ions. Hydrocarbon solvents which are partially or totally immiscible in water are used to extract the metal ions and may contain additives such as complexforming agents to aid in the mass transfer of metal ions to the solvent phase. After contacting and separation of the phases, the metal ions are recovered from the hydrocarbon solvent.
