    • An apparatus is disclosed for the reception of a surgical instrument inserted through a cannula assembly. An orifice in a seal member defines a central longitudinal axis in general alignment with the cannula assembly. The seal member includes an elastic member for engaging the surgical object about the orifice and forming a fluid-tight interface. A fiber loop is at least partially embedded in the elastic member and serves to compress central portions of the elastic member around the instrument. The fiber loop may form a loop around the orifice and may cooperate with other fiber loops similarly embedded in the seal.

    • A surgical seal assembly for use with a surgical access device includes a seal housing defining a central longitudinal axis and having a longitudinal passage dimensioned to permit passage of a surgical instrument through the seal housing, a gimbal mount disposed within the seal housing and having a gimbal seal member defining an aperture for substantial sealed reception of the surgical instrument, and an interface seal disposed within the seal housing. The gimbal mount is adapted for angular movement relative to the central longitudinal axis upon angulation of the surgical instrument whereby the gimbal seal member substantially maintains the sealed reception of the surgical instrument. The interface seal includes an interface seal member extending at least along the longitudinal axis and being in substantial contacting sealing relation with the gimbal mount. The interface seal member is adapted to maintain the sealing relation with the gimbal mount upon angular movement thereof.

    • This invention is a hemostasis cannula comprising a housing (10) having a passage (11) therethrough sized to receive a catheter (57), and a valve body (1, 1', 1') mounted in the passage (11). The valve body (1, 1', 1') includes an opening (2, 3, 102, 103, 112, 113, 2', 3', 2', 3') therethrough which forms a seal around a catheter (57) enclosed within the cannula. In one embodiment, an internal ring (8') of pliable material lines at least a portion of the interior of the opening (2', 3'). The valve body (1, 1', 1') is compressed within the cannula housing (10). When the catheter (57) is removed, the valve body (1, 1', 1') closes thus blocking airflow into the patient's blood vessel and also blocking blood flow out of the patient's blood vessel. The cannula housing (10) also includes a side port (45) for introducing fluids into the patient's blood vessel.
