    • The present invention relates to a rug for animals having four legs, especially horses, which rug is provided with a gusset, eventually forming a pleat (10). An elastic element (11) is arranged in said gusset/pleat (10). The elastic element (11) allowing the edges (12) of the gusset/pleat (10), essentially extending in the same direction as the gusset/pleat (10), to be brought together by means of the non-locking force in the elastic element (11), and that the elastic element allows the gusset/pleat (10) to be expanded. This permits the horse to move without having said rug rubbing at the shoulder portion of the horse.

    • A horse rug (10) comprises a front closure means (14) which can be engaged to secure the rug to a horse when the opposed front edges (15, 15') of the rug (10) are brought together, the point of closure being positioned, in use, not lower than the point of shoulder of the horse. The rug (10) is provided with strips of webbing (17, 18 and 17', 18') on each of its front edges (15, 15') respectively, which webbing forms part of the closure means (14). The strips of webbing (17, 18 and 17', 18') define an angle of between 40° and 70° causing the front of the rug to exhibit a collar effect about the neck of the horse, said angle being adapted to accommodate at its interior the point of shoulder (16) of the horse, such that the closure (14), and thereby the front (11) of the rug, is maintained in position relative to the point of shoulder (16) while the horse undergoes its normal movements. The horse rug (10) is designed so as to accommodate the structure of the shoulder of the horse and thus obviates the problems of rubbing and interference with the natural movement of the horse observed with conventional horse rugs.
