    • A fuel supply apparatus for supplying fuel to a compression ignition engine comprising a rotary distributor member (11) having a delivery passage (13) which can register in turn with outlet ports (14) connected to the injection nozzles of the engine. Fuel is supplied to the delivery passage from an accumulator (20) under the control of a valve (18). The accumulator is charged with fuel by means of a high pressure pump (8) which is a cam actuated pump and fuel is supplied to the high pressure pump by a low pressure pump (31). A valve (34) is provided to control the output pressure of the low pressure pump so that the amount of fuel supplied to the high pressure pump can be varied for the purpose of controlling the fuel pressure within the accumulator. The apparatus further comprises a second accumulator (73) from which fuel can be supplied to permit fuel delivery at a lower pressure.

    • An accumulator type fuel injection system has a cam actuated plunger pump (13, 14) for charging an accumulator chamber (17) with fuel under pressure and valve means (31) which in one position connects the accumulator chamber with a fuel delivery passage (28) to cause delivery of fuel and in its other position to connect the delivery passage to a drain channel (33A) to terminate delivery of fuel. The drain channel includes a restrictor (35). The system includes a piston (38) slidable in a cylinder (37) having one end connected to the plunger pump through a valve (19) and to the outlet of a low pressure pump (23). The other end of the cylinder is connected to the drain channel upstream of the restrictor. The piston acts to displace fuel in the one end of the cylinder to the plunger pump when the valve means (31) is moved to its second position.

    • A fuel injection pumping apparatus of the rotary distributor type has a fixed stroke pumping plunger 14 housed in a bore 13 formed in a rotary distributor member. The pumping plunger is actuated by cam lobes formed on a cam ring 18. A piston 43 housed in a cylinder 44 is provided and one end of the cylinder is connected to the bore 13. The piston is spring biased towards the one end of the cylinder and the extent of movement of the piston away from the one end of the cylinder is limited by a stop 53. The piston 43 absorbs the initial volume of fuel delivered by the pumping plunger as the latter is moved inwardly by the cam lobes thereby ensuring that fuel is delivered to an associated engine at a high rate.
