    • An electric reluctance machine has a rotor 12 and a stator core 10 and a set of coils 18 embracing stator poles to energise them. In between the stator poles are spaces in which adjacent lengths of the embracing coils lie. Between adjacent coils sharing a common space the stator core is formed into a projection 22 extending radially towards the rotor. The projection increases the contact area between the coil and the stator. This has the effect of reducing the thermal resistance between the two. Consequently, the coil current can be increased, giving a greater maximum motor output. Furthermore, the overall stiffness of the stator core is increased by the presence of the projections.

    • A method is disclosed for starting an electric motor. The motor comprises an encoder having a discate member (18) which rotates with a rotor. The encoder has angularly evenly spaced leading edges but angularly unevenly spaced trailing edges. A code sequence based on the unevenly spaced trailing edges is detected by a sensor (16) which sequence is decodable to derive information on the position of the rotor relative to the motor stator. To start the motor selected stator poles are energised to orientate the rotor into a predetermined position. The encoder then monitors the rotor position. The induced sensor output signal then allows the position of the rotor to be confirmed or corrected and, thereafter, normal running of the motor to be effected.

    • A controller for a switched electric machine, especially a switched reluctance motor, takes timing information from a rotor position transducer to generate a switch-off output at a point near maximum phase inductance in a phase inductance cycle. A switch-on signal is generated after a delay but still within the phase inductance cycle. A simple form of single-pulse control is thereby achieved. A comparator is also provided which monitors phase winding current. A pulse generator is actuated by the comparator when the winding current exceeds a reference level and is used to control the motor in a chopping mode at low speeds and is disabled by the comparator at higher speeds when the single-pulse control is used.
