    • A flame simulating assembly (20) for providing an image of flames (22) and simulating one or more actual fuel elements in a fire. The flame simulating assembly includes one or more light sources (24), a screen (26) adapted for transmission of the image of flames therethrough, and a simulated fuel bed (32). The simulated fuel bed (32) includes a simulated ember bed (34) and one or more simulated fuel elements (40) positioned on an upper surface of the simulated ember bed. Each simulated fuel element includes a base surface (42) with a light-transmitting portion (44) and an exposed surface (46) which is at least partially viewable. The base surface (42) is positioned proximal to the upper surface (36) of the simulated ember bed (34). The exposed surface includes one or more uncovered portions (48) through which light from the light source (24) is transmittable.

    • An assembly including a substantially transparent front panel and a partially translucent screen with a partially reflective front surface positioned to face a rear side of the front panel and spaced apart therefrom by a predetermined distance. A first image is defined on the rear side for reflection by the front surface to provide a virtual image thereof. A back wall is positioned behind the screen and displays a second image on an exposed surface thereof facing the rear surface of the screen. The exposed surface is spaced apart from the front surface of the screen by the predetermined distance. The virtual image is located substantially in the plane of the exposed surface so that the virtual image appears to be positioned behind the screen.

    • A simulated fuel bed for simulating a combustible fuel in an artificial fire. The simulated fuel bed includes a plurality of simulated combustible fuel elements, including one or more light-producing simulated combustible fuel elements. A body of the light-producing simulated combustible fuel element has one or more cavities therein, and one or more light sources positioned to direct light therefrom inside the cavity. The body includes an exterior surface and one or more light-transmitting parts extending between the cavity and the exterior surface. The light-transmitting part is positioned in a path of light from the light source. The light from the light source is transmittable through the light-transmitting part to the exterior surface for simulating glowing embers of the combustible fuel.

    • A fireplace assembly (10) includes a partially reflective vertical screen (16) with a diffusing back surface. A simulated fuel bed including simulated fuel and a simulated ember bed (24) is mounted in front of the screen. Light from a light source is reflected by a flicker element (20) onto the diffusing back surface of the screen to provide an image of moving flames. A plurality of reflectors (34) is mounted on the simulated fuel and light from the light source is reflected from a second flicker element (20') to the reflectors (34) to provide an impression of glowing embers.

    • An electric fireplace (12) is provided having an improved flame simulating apparatus. The flame simulating apparatus includes a light source (30), a flame effect element (58) for transmitting light to produce a flame effect, and a flicker element (62, 64) having reflective strips for reflecting light from the light source for subsequent reflection by the flame effect element. An alternate flame effect element for reflecting light to produce a flame effect is also provided. A screen having a partially reflecting surface and a diffusing surface is positioned with the flame effect element extending proximate to the diffusing surface. An alternate screen is provided having a diffusing region through its thickness. A fuel bed (26) is positioned immediately adjacent to the partially reflecting surface of the screen to produce an image of the fuel bed (26) on the screen with the image of moving flames appearing to emanate between the fuel bed and its reflected image. The screen may also be given a non-planar diffusing region such that the image of moving flames appears to emanate from behind the reflected image of the fuel bed. A fire wall simulating apparatus is also provided to provide a reflection of a simulated fire wall on the partially reflecting surface which appears to be a fire wall behind the fuel bed.
