    • A cast saw for removing hard orthopaedic bandages, for example formed of plaster is disclosed. The cast saw is a unitary device containing a rechargeable battery pack (14) in a removable filter form collection chamber (9). A shroud (15) covers at least a portion of the saw blade (2) and such shroud (15) is movable by the cutting operation from the interference of the casting material as the blade (2) is received within the casting material while cutting through such casting material. A dust channel (6) is formed within the housing (1) and dust and debris caused by the cutting operation is pulled through such dust channel (6) by the forces applied by impeller (8) rotated by an electric motor (3) received within the housing (1). A pressure sensitive switch is supplied which senses an increase in force on the saw blade and increases the current supplied to the motor proportionally in order to provide additional torque to the motor.

    • A modular knee prosthesis includes a femoral component having a pair of spaced apart condylar portions each having a superior articulating surface and an inferior surface, and a boss structure disposed between and connecting the condylar portions. The prosthesis further includes an elongate stem member that mounts within the medullary canal of a distal portion of a femur, a collar and at least one securing bolt. The collar distal surface and the inferior surface of the boss structure define a selected mounting angle therebetween, and the securing bolt, which is adapted to mount within an aperture formed in the boss structure, has a head portion with a spherical first surface from which an elongate shaft portion extends. The shaft of the securing bolt can be disposed at a generally centrally located position or at a non-centrally located position on the head portion of the bolt.

    • A bone fixation device such as a screw, pin, staple, cable or anchor has a microtextured contact surface to enhance installation or gripping characteristics, preferably by providing directional or anisotropic engagement. A surface texture comprised of patterned microfeatures imparts a roughness or actual mechanical engagement that prevents loosening. In different embodiments the features resemble an array of microbumps or pyramids, or anisotropic features such as rasp teeth, shingles, or slanted cantilevered fiber/rods. The use of microbumps present a smaller surface area when moving, while providing full area contact after the surfaces have relaxed or decompressed; installation may be effected with low force, while high static or resting friction prevents disengagement. Features with directional asymmetry or angled suspension allow the textured surface to slide or deflect when the fixation device moves in one direction, while presenting a high resistance to torque or linear motion when moved in the other direction. Manufacturing is achieved with ion beams or directional treatment with energetic radiation, and regular arrays of the microfeatures may be produced as stationary surface growth phenomena without the use of pattern masks or mechanical contact. One manufacturing apparatus rotates the fixation device about a longitudinal axis while it is irradiated along an oblique axis. A bone pin may have centrally-directed spurs that allow a multi-segment fracture to be securely pinned without threading. An elastic fastener body such as a screw or pin can be pre-tensioned to place the bone under a torsional or compressive load, or introduce strain at the healing site.

    • A modified investment casting process is effective to more safely and efficiently produce cast articles. The casting process utilizes a solid, rigid riser tube, in place of a wax tree, upon which heat disposable, positive models of an article to be cast are joined. This assembly is coated with a refractory and after drying of the refractory the heat disposable positive models are removed. Thereafter the ceramic shell is heated and fired and molten casting material is poured into the assembly. The molten casting material flows from the riser tube to fill the cavities formerly occupied by the positive models. Upon cooling and solidification of the casting material, the refractory is fractured and cast parts are removed.
