A feedback unit on the low-frequency side feeds a low-frequency carrier signal portion contained in the transmit signal back to a distortion compensating unit on the low-frequency side, and a feedback unit on the high-frequency side feeds a high-frequency carrier signal portion contained in the transmit signal back to a distortion compensating unit on the high-frequency side. The distortion compensating units compensate for distortion on the low- and high-frequency sides.

    • Apparatus (20) and methods (50) that compensate for the effects of gain and phase variations of a high power amplifier (40) in the presence of multicarrier traffic. The calibration system (20) and method (50) impose negligible degradation to the multicarrier traffic processed by the high power amplifier (40). A calibration signal generator (21) is used to generate (51) a plurality of nondisrupting calibration signals, such as pseudorandom numbers, which are also summed (23,52) and combined (31,53) with the multicarrier traffic signals. The plurality of nondisrupting calibration signals are also combined (24,54) to produce a combined nondisrupting calibration signal. Each of the nondisrupting calibration signals is selectively output (22,55) and is combined (26,57) with sampled (56) versions of the amplified multicarrier traffic signals produced by the high power amplifier (40) to despread them. The despread multicarrier traffic signals are then processed (58) in a processor (28) to generate signals indicative of total signal power, intermodulation power, and phase shift of the de-spread multicarrier traffic signals to determine a current operating point of the high power amplifier on its gain transfer curve. Gain and phase control signals are generated (59) by a processor (28) that are coupled to the gain control (32) and phase control (33) circuits to set the amplifier at its most desirable operating points.
