Eine radiale Abmessung 30 des ersten Abschnitts 21 des Zwischenschlägers 16 ist größer als eine radiale Abmessung 31 des zweiten Abschnitts 22 des Zwischenschlägers 16.

    • Rock breaking apparatus includes a guide column (112) within which a weight (12) falls under gravity to strike a tool (134). A piece (146) of shock-absorbing material is located at or near the base of said column such that it enables force to be transmitted from said weight (12) to the tool (134), whilst minimising the effects of the impact of said weight (12) on other parts of the apparatus. The piece (146) of shock-absorbing material has an aperture therethrough, for the passage of the tool (134). The tool (134) may have a recessed portion (140) which co-operates with a retaining pin (144) located substantially at right angles to the direction of motion of the tool (134). The apparatus may also have operating means, including means for raising a weight, means for holding a weight in one of a number of positions and means for allowing said weight to fall.

    • A tool assembly (4) for working a material (R) such as breaking rock. Assembly (4) includes a tool mounting (17) having a fixed section (18), and a movable section (19) for movement relative to the fixed section (18) in a working direction (DW) and an opposite return direction (DR). During a working stroke, tool (34) is engaged with material (R) and moved in working direction (DW) from the operative position to the operated position and thereafter in unison with the movable section (19) under action of a working force applied to tool (34) thereby to work material (R). The tool assembly (4) also includes biasing means (29) acting between the fixed section (18) and movable section (19) to absorb the applied tool working forces transferred from tool (34) to the movable section (19), and also to provide a restoring force to the movable section (19) for returning the movable section (19) in return direction (DR) upon conclusion of the working stroke of the tool (34).
