    • A pneumatic height adjustment column is provided for a chair. The column includes a support tube (7), carrier tube (13), pneumatic cartridge (17), hub fastener (35), and shaft fastener (51). The support tube has a top end which is generally open, and a bottom portion (9) which is adapted to be mounted to a chair base. The bottom portion has an opening (16) with a smaller diameter than that of the support tube (7). The carrier tube (13) has a top portion adapted to be mounted to a support housing (6) for a chair seat. The top portion has an opening with a smaller diameter than that of the carrier tube (13). The carrier tube (13) also has a generally open bottom end which telescopically engages the top end of the support tube. The pneumatic cartridge (17) has a cylinder (19) positioned within the carrier tube (13), a shaft (23) and hub (30). The cylinder (19) has a diameter greater than that of the opening in the carrier tube (13). The shaft (23) extends downwardly from the cylinder (19) and has a bottom end which passes through the opening in the bottom of the support tube (7). The hub (30) is disposed on a top portion of the cylinder (19) and passes through the opening in the top of the carrier tube (13). The hub fastener (35) releasably engages the hub (30) and carrier tube (13). The shaft fastener (51) is attached to the shaft (23) and maintains the position of the bottom end of the shaft (23) through the opening in the bottom of the support tube (7).

    • The invention relates to a locking fluid spring comprising a piston (20) movable in a cylinder (1) containing a fluid (14) so that movement of the piston varies the pressure of the fluid, a first flow path (10) between opposite sides of the piston, controlled by a valve (11) operable externally of the cylinder, the valve (11) being movable in the first flow path between a locked position of the spring preventing flow of the fluid from one side of the piston to the other and an unlocked position allowing controlled flow of fluid through the first flow path, a relief flow path (30), a closure member (22) urged by spring biasing means (25) to a normally closed position closing the relief path, the arrangement being such that excess pressure on one side of the piston will act to move the closure member to an open position in which fluid can flow to relieve the excess pressure and allow movement of the piston in the cylinder while the valve remains in its locked position. The biassing means acts to reset the locked spring immediately an overload is removed. Preferably the first flow path (10) is through the centre of the piston and the relief flow path (3) is also through the piston. Preferably the closure member comprises an outer annulus (22) of the piston (20) slidable axially relative to a central portion (21) of the piston.
