    • A helical-element antenna as part of a communication system is mechanically steered with reference to an azimuth axis (28) and an elevation axis (32) within a positioning envelope greater than hemispherical. The system for mechanically steering the helical antenna (10) includes a supporting frame (22) having an azimuth member with a longitudinal axis coinciding with the azimuth axis (28) around which the antenna rotates. Further, the supporting frame includes an elevation member (30) that is integral with the azimuth member and has a longitudinal axis displaced from the azimuth axis. An interface fitting rotatably mounts the antenna to the elevation member. The supporting frame is rotatably mounted to a pedestal base (20) that has a plane perpendicular to the azimuth axis. To position the antenna about the azimuth axis, an azimuth steering unit (36) is energized to rotate the supporting frame 360 degrees around the azimuth axis. For positioning the antenna about the elevation axis, an elevation steering unit (56) rotates the interface fitting and the antenna through a gear coupling about the elevation axis. The total rotation excursion about the elevation axis is typically 180 degrees and points the antenna through a range of elevation angles.

    • A system and method are provided for keeping track of the ownership of unique items in a system including a server computer (12) connected to a database and at least one client computer (14) connected to the server computer over a network (10). Operation information concerning the item is entered into the client computer (14). This information, includes at least a description of the item and its owner, is uploaded from the client computer to said server computer where the information is stored in the database. In response, the system provides from the server to the client computer a transaction identification number related to the information and an item number related to the item. A user at the client computer can use the transaction identification number to access the uploaded information at the database to determine the current owner of the item. Upon a transfer of ownership, the new owner can use at least one client computer (16) to enter the transaction identification number and new owner information to update the information in the database to indicate the new owner and to indicate the prior owner as a seller of the item. In response a new transaction identification number is provided from the server computer to the client computer.

    • A method and multicoupler for a receiver at a base station in a cellular/PCS radio communication system includes a cooled container (10) that is mounted on an antenna tower (12) at the base station. The container (10) is mounted on the antenna tower adjacent an antenna and contains thereinside a preselector filter (14), a highly linear amplifier (16), and a directional coupler (18) that are cooled to a temperature less than 175 K and greater than 100 K. A power splitter (24) is connected between the output from the container and the radio system receiver, and is located at a ground station near the base of the antenna tower (12). Cooling the components inside the container (10), particularly the amplifier, to a temperature of about 150 K reduces the noise from the multicoupler so that base station range is extended, building penetration is improved, and subscriber transmit power may be reduced. The multicoupler may also be used for duplex channels, and in this event a transmit filter may also be cooled to reduce transmit power dissipation by the filter.
