    • Rivets are delivered from a feed chute to a transfer location and blown through a feed tube to a loading device. The presence of a rivet is sensed both at the transfer location and at the loading device and a fault indicator is operated in the event a rivet sensed and transported from the transfer location does not wind up in the loading device. The operator hits the reset button which blows clean air thru the feed tube in an attempt to free the jammed rivet. In the event this does not occur, the system assumes the operator cleared the jam and loads the next rivet into position to be transferred and continues the cycle.

    • A modified Phillips-type screwdriver bit is disclosed that is fully compatible with a standard Phillips-head fastener, and is designed to significantly increase the level of torque that can be applied to the fastener while at the same time substantially reducing the cam-out forces normally produced by a standard Phillips screwdriver bit. These results are accomplished by forming generated surfaces along the side walls of the bit wings so that the included angle defined by the converging side walls of adjoining bit wings gradually increases from the Phillips standard 92 degrees at the base of the bit wings to approximately 105 degrees at the wing tips. This configuration serves to confine the application of torque to the side surfaces of the bit wings initially along contact lines adjacent and parallel to the roots of the bit wings with the contact area gradually progressing radially outwardly as torque levels increase and the opposing side surfaces of the recess wings in the head of the fastener begin to deform.

    • A method of bonding soles to shoes using a moisture curable adhesive composition is described. The method involves application of a layer of the adhesive, preferably as a melt at a temperature between 80°C and 100°Cto a sole and/or a show upper, chain extension of the polyurethane by moisture, heat activation of at least one of the layers and pressing the sole and shoe upper together. The method exhibits tolerance of chain extension conditions and of delays priorto heat activation and also leads to bonds of good initial and final values. The adhesive comprises a polyurethane prepolymer having NCO groups available for reaction, and a monofunctional reactant present in amounts sufficient to react with up to 40 mole % of the isocyanate groups of the prepolymer. Preferred polyurethanes are based on polyesters from aliphatic dicarboxylic acids and diols together with aromatic diisocyantes for example MDI. The monofunctional reactant influences the extended ability of a chain extended layer of the adhesive to be activated by heat after comparatively long periods in combination with the achievement of good bond strengths.
