    • Methods and systems are presented for spectral analysis of data generated by one or more sonar sensors. A covariance matrix of the captured sound is derived, denoted by an LxL matrix R, and for each power value which is to be calculated for each direction, a set w of L weights are derived which minimize w H Rw subject to a constraint which is itself a function of a covariance matrix of sound captured by the sensors or based on a theoretical noise model. The set of weights w is used to produce a power spectrum at a particular time instant. Embodiments of the invention can be used to compute two types of spectrum: (i) a spatial spectrum and (ii) a frequency spectrum (or, by extension, a Doppler spectrum). That is, it may be performed in either the spatial or the frequency domain.
