    • A hydrophobic filler material for alkaline paper is disclosed. The filler material comprises finely divided particles of an inorganic material, a majority of particles having a surface all of which is substantially modified with a water soluble C12-C22 fatty acid salt and a metal ion in an amount at least effective to complex all of the fatty acid salt present. An alkaline paper is disclosed. The alkaline paper comprises a hydrophobic filler material comprising finely divided inorganic material, a majority of particles having substantially all of their surface being modified with a water soluble C12-C22 fatty acid salt. A method for improving sizing of alkaline paper is disclosed, comprising preparing a filler material and adding the same to cellulose fiber. The filler material is prepared by selecting finely divided particles of an inorganic material and substantially modifying all of the surface of a majority of the particles with a C12-C22 fatty acid salt, forming a hydrophobic coating thereon.

    • Surfactant is recovered from the foamed aqueous admixture recovered from a fibrous web forming process by draining surfactant-depleted liquid from the foamed aqueous admixture thereby forming a surfactant-enriched foam, separating the surfactant-depleted liquid from the surfactant-enriched foam and recycling surfactant from the surfactant-enriched foam to the fibrous web forming process in the form of a stream having a surfactant concentration exceeding that of the foamed aqueous admixture. The recycle stream may be obtained by removing air from the surfactant-enriched foam. Surfactant may also be recovered from the surfactant-depleted stream by aerating it to form a foam from which surfactant-lean liquid is drained. The process may be repeated on the surfactant-lean liquid until the surfactant content of the finally obtained lean liquid is sufficiently low to permit discharge to the environment.

    • The invention concerns a method for the application and dosage of a coating material onto a moving base (B), such as a paper or board web, the face of a counter-roll, or equivalent. In the method the coating material (P₁) is fed into the pressurized coating-material chamber (3) in the coating device, which said chamber is defined by the coating member (1), the front wall (2) of the coating device, the edge seals, and by the moving base (B) to be coated. In order to seal the front wall (2) of the coating device against air and/or in order to lubricate the front wall, ahead of the front wall, to the inlet side of the moving base (B), a liquid, solution, dispersion or a corresponding fluid substance (P₂) is fed. The feeding of the said fluid substance is arranged so that its direction of movement at the sealing point is parallel to the movement of the moving base (B). The invention also concerns a device intended for carrying out the method.
