    • The invention relates to a device (2) for combining, at a combining section (16), at least two partial flows (4, 8) of articles to be sorted (6, 10) to form a total flow (18) of articles to be sorted (6, 10). In said total flow, the articles to be sorted (6, 10) are, to a large extent, equidistant from one another, whereby: f) a withdrawal device (12), which is operated in an interruptible manner, and a first acceleratable section (34), which is connected downstream from said withdrawal device (12), are arranged in at least one first partial flow (4); g) a withdrawal device (14), which is operated in manner that is free from interruptions, and a second acceleratable section (36), which is connected downstream from this withdrawal device (14), are arranged in at least one second partial flow (8), and; h) a control device (CU) is provided that, on the second acceleratable section (36), temporarily stores or accelerates the articles to be sorted (10a to 10d) that are separated by the withdrawal device (14), which is operated in manner that is free from interruptions, in order to ensure largely equidistant intervals between the articles to be sorted (6a to 6g, 10a to 10d) in the total flow (18). In contrast to the previous problematic handling of articles to be sorted, such as leaflets and bulk mailings with, among other things, loose-leaf inserts, the invention enables, in the second partial flow, these articles that are to be sorted, to be continuously and separately withdrawn from a stack without being subjected to the risk of paper jams as a result of interruptions.

    • The invention provides an apparatus and method for detecting overlapped mail pieces (16) when sorting batches of flat mail (16) pieces as the pieces are conveyed on their narrow sides, whereby the sorted mail pieces are moved successively standing on their narrow sides in a longitudinal direction along a bed or path (14). Positioned below the path is an electronic line camera (12) arranged with its longitudinal axis perpendicular to the feed direction of the sorted mail pieces (16) that scans the lower narrow edges of the mail pieces through a gap (18) in the bed. In one aspect, two sources of light, such as light emitting diodes (26), are positioned laterally from the line camera (12) diagonally illuminate the mail pieces (16) from below as the mail pieces pass over a window (18) in the path (14) so that the edges of the scanned narrow sides are emphasized by shadowing. Features of the scanned images are transmitted to an evaluation means that utilizes statistical analyses and compared with models of known physical mail piece configurations determined off-line to determine the model that most agrees with the analysis of the scanned image data. In one aspect the evaluation means comprises a microprocessor (22) that is preprogrammed to compare and statistically analyze the captured image data with reference to standard image data and determine the probability that the scanned image data represents over lapping mail pieces, in which case the microprocessor (22) generates a signal that triggers corrective action.

    • A device for emptying rectangular, open-top parcel containers (11) provided with lateral guide elements, whereby said parcel containers (1) are guided and displaced on lateral guide tracks (3). Continuous recesses (11) running in the direction of displacement are located in the bottom of the parcel container. Openly protruding supporting fingers (6) that are inclined in an opposite direction to the direction of displacement are arranged in between the guide tracks (3). The recesses (11) in the container floor and the supporting fingers (6) are dimensioned and positioned in such a way that the supporting fingers (6) are inserted into the recesses (11) underneath the parcels when the parcel container (1) is displaced. In the direction of displacement, the front and rear walls of the package container (1) have open-top recesses (5) at least in the area above the supporting fingers (6). Holes (7) for supporting elements (2) are provided inside the guide rails (3) in the vicinity of said fingers (6). The parcel containers drop down while the packages remain on the support fingers (6).
