    • A controller (3) receives a signal indicating the temperature of a print head (1) from a head temperature detection thermistor (2). The controller sets a cooling time for the print head based on a time in which the temperature of the print head increase from a first temperature to a second temperature and an environment temperature detected by an environment temperature detection thermistor. When the temperature of the print head exceeds the second temperature due to excessive heat accumulation therein, printing and movement of the print head are suspended for the cooling time immediately after completion of printing of one or a plurality of bands at a position where the print head is located at that time. Thus, the temperature of the print head is decreased.

    • Provided is an image forming method which prevents the temperatures of printing heads from exceeding a predetermined temperature. In this image forming method, its basic assignment is changed when any one of the temperatures detected by the respective temperature sensors (61 to 64) exceeds the predetermined temperature (for example, 60°C). Specifically, each time the forming of an image on a printing medium (for example, a label) is completed, the temperatures of the respective printing heads (K1 to K4) are detected with the respective temperature sensors. When any one of the temperatures thus detected exceeds 60°C, the association of raster line regions with ink ejection opening arrays (N1 to N4) (the association of rasters with the printing heads) under the basic assignment is shifted one-by-one.

    • An inkjet printer (10) uses a printhead (12) that passes repeatedly across a print medium in individual swaths. The printhead (12) has individual nozzles (21) that are fired repeatedly during each printhead swath to apply an ink pattern to the print medium. Before any given swath, the printer (10) analyzes factors that might require a reduction in print density. Anticipated printhead temperature is one factor that might require a reduction in print density. The printer (10) monitors the print density and peak printhead temperature during each printhead swath. It then uses these values to calculate, prior to each new swath, a maximum permissible print density. If a reduction in print density is required, the printer (10) temporarily disables selected nozzles (21) to produce a reduced-height swath rather than pausing between swaths or reducing the printhead velocity relative to the page.
