    • A system (50) for transcribing, into electronic form, markings (Figs 6, 7) drawn on a whiteboard or blackboard (52). An electronic camera (54) such as an ordinary video camera is mounted on a pan/tilt head (55), controlled by computer (56), in the ceiling or to the side of the board (52). Images are captured by directing the camera (54) successively at small regions of the board (52), then processing these snapshots electronically, leading to the generation of a complete, undistorted, high-resolution image of the entire board (52).

    • A hand-held printer system is designed for printing a stored image onto a surface (260). In particular, various embodiments are adapted for hand-held printing onto the surface of a whiteboard (260). In embodiments, the printer system comprises a marking mechanism (240) including at least one print head, a global position sensing system (150) that senses the position of the at least one print head, and a control mechanism (120) that actuates the at least one print head based on the sensed position. In other embodiments, the system comprises a local position sensing system that senses a position of the at least one print head relative to a drawing surface.

    • The invention automatically or semi-automatically integrates a computational system with an information collage to preserve the advantages of conventional information collages while alleviating many problems associated with such collages. A physical information collage (e. g. a pin board with spatially differentiated pin-mounted task cards, each card having a detectable identity tag) can be made part of a computational system by sensing the identity, position, and contents of the component artifacts. In effect, each task card has its content and position stored in a database, with movement of a particular task card automatically resulting in update of the database to record the new position of that task card. A preferred enhanced information collage 10 has a surface 30 for detachable support of a plurality of collage components 32, 36, 38, 40, 41, 42, 46, 47 and comprises an identification unit 14 for determining informational content of at least some of the plurality of collage components, a location unit 16 for tracking position of at least some of the plurality of collage components, and an information processing system 18 connected to the identification unit and the location unit for storing state records of position and informational content of at least some of the plurality of collage components, with the information processing system being updateable to reflect changes in position and informational content of the at least some of the plurality of collage components.
