    • A preform element, such as a cutting element for a rotary drag-type drill bit, includes a facing table (20) of superhard material having a front face (23), a peripheral surface(29), and a rear surface (27) bonded to a substrate (21) which is less hard than the superhard material. The rear surface (27) of the facing table is integrally formed with a plurality of ribs (25, 26) which project into the substrate (21), and at least major portions of the ribs extend across the rear surface of the facing table in directions which are generally radial with respect to at least one point (28) which is adjacent or outside the peripheral surface (29) of the facing table.

    • A preform element includes a facing table (21') of superhard material having a front face, an outer peripheral surface, and a rear surface bonded to a substrate (25') which is less hard than the superhard material. The facing table comprising a peripheral region (23)' surrounding an inner region (22)', the peripheral region having an inner surface (30) which is inclined at an angle of greater than 90° to the rear surface (31) of the facing table so as to face in a direction having a component rearwardly away from the facing table as well as inwardly towards said inner region (22'). The inner region of the facing table may be formed with projections (24') extending into the substrate.

    • A rotary drill bit for drilling holes in subsurface formations comprises a bit body (10) having a leading face and a gauge region, and a plurality of blades (12) formed on the leading face of the bit body and extending outwardly away from the axis of the bit towards the gauge region so as to define a fluid flow channel (14) between the leading edge of each blade and the trailing edge of the adjacent preceding blade. A plurality of cutting elements (18) are mounted along the leading edge of each blade, and there is provided, in one or more of the channels, a main nozzle (20) which directs fluid along the leading edge of one blade so as to clean and cool the cutting elements on it, and a subsidiary nozzle (22) which is located and orientated so as to direct fluid along the trailing edge of the preceding blade in a direction opposite to the direction of flow from the main nozzle, so as to tend to enhance partial recirculation of fluid flow in the flow channel between the blades.
