    • A method and apparatus for perforating oil well casing in a well bore, with particular advantage in highly deviated well bores, uses a perforating gun assembly (15) run into the well bore (10) using the production tubing (12). A sliding sleeve (14) is connected in the tubing above the gun and a packer (13) is run in for setting above the sliding sleeve and gun. The assembly is run into the well bore until the gun extends into the highly deviated portion of the bore where the well casing is to be perforated. The packer is set into place, isolating that portion of the well bore below the packer from that portion above the packer, and the sliding sleeve is opened using a wireline or other means. The well bore below the packer is pressurized through the tubing to ensure that the packer is properly set. The pressure is then allowed to bleed off and the sliding sleeve is closed. The gun uses a differential pressure-actuated firing head which is actuated upon a predetermined differential pressure between the production tubing bore and the annulus between the tubing and the casing. Thus, a well casing can be perforated using relatively low values of actuating pressure, which provides greater control over perforating conditions such as underbalance.

    • A downhole tool for perforating a well and obtaining fluid samples therefrom, comprises a retrievable packer (20), perforating guns (24) and a sampler (22) disposed between the packer and guns which is adapted for entrapping a fluid sample without flowing well fluids into the tool string. An operating piston is slidably disposed in a cylinder above the packer and is used to actuate a sampler valve in the sampler. A seal ensures that all portions of a sampling chamber in the sampler are disposed below the packer. The operating piston is actuated in response to a pressure differential between a well annulus above the packer and an internal pressure in the tool. The sampler includes a plurality of sampler modules disposed in the sampling chamber. Each of the sampler modules includes a valve which automatically closes after a predetermined volume of fluid fills a sampler module chamber defined in the sampler module.

    • A downhole tool apparatus has a housing (12) with a compression chamber (232) defined therein. A fill passage (234) is disposed through the housing for placing the compression chamber in open flow fluid communication with a well annulus (236) so that well fluid may flow into the compression chamber as the apparatus is lowered into a well. An isolation valve (242) selectively closes the fill passage to trap well fluid in the compression chamber. An operating element (162) is operated by an actuating piston (140) slidably disposed in the housing. A first side of the actuating piston is in fluid pressure communication with the compression chamber so that a volume of the compression chamber is decreased when the actuating piston moves between first and second position thereof relative to the housing. An injection passage (286) is preferably provided for injecting pressurized gas into the compression chamber at a location within the compression chamber such that the injected gas will directly contact at a gas-well fluid interface an upper surface of well fluid that flows into the compression chamber. The compression chamber is preferably primarily defined by an elongate diametrically irregular annular space, and the gas-well fluid interface moves upward past a number of irregular diameters of this diametrically irregular elongated space, as the apparatus is lowered into a well.
