    • A valve assembly comprises an upper valve assembly (9a) and a lower valve assembly (9b). The upper valve assembly includes a valve body (10), a spring retainer (11) and an upper spring (12). The lower valve assembly includes a retainer ring (13), an O-ring (14) and a valve seat member (15). The valve body (10) comprises a valve disc (10a) and a valve stem (19b). The valve disc (10a) has a lower peripheral surface (16) which is bevelled and the lower extremity of the bevelled surface meets an annular protrusion (17) which has a flat lower surface. The O-ring (14) fits within respective grooves provided in the retainer ring (13) and the valve seat member (15). The valve seat (15) is arranged to be located in a valve port (28), and when the upper valve assembly is moved downwardly the annular protrusion (17) is forced against the O-ring (14) which then forms an additional seal with the adjacent housing of the valve port (28) to completely close the valve assembly.

    • A diaphragm-type valve uses a multiple annular metal diaphragm (36) welded about its inner periphery to a valve operating stem (34). The diaphragm is sealingly clamped about its outer periphery to the valve body and is also clamped about its inner periphery at a location spaced outwardly of the weld to prevent the weld from being subjected to flexure stresses during valve actuation. The outer periphery of the diaphragm (36′) may be welded to the valve body (10′) outwardly of the outer clamp. The actuating assembly (20) is arranged to produce non-rotary, reciprocatory movement of the operating stem (34) through a bonnet mounted rotary actuator (116). A stem tip seal (16) comprises a metallic seal ring (152) backed by a PTFE ring (158) and surrounded by a harder plastics ring (160) held captive by a sleeve (166).
