摘要： A method of providing information in a directory system comprising a directory for goods and services; a communications network; a directory computer operated by a directory provider; a plurality of search computers operated by enquirers which search computers are connected within the network; and a plurality of active content providers operating active content provider computers, at least some of which are connected to the directory computer. The services and goods are classified by unique identifiers. Lists of goods and services are provided as provider content from both active and passive content providers. These are stored in a provider database with unique identifiers. The directory computer on request downloads to the search computer one or more queries to allow the search computer specify the search correctly and then the directory computer downloads the search result. The active content provider computers update the search from time to time. The purpose is to provide a comprehensive listing of useful information to an enquirer in an easily searched form while simultaneously allowing the active content providers to tailor the information supplied.

摘要： An access control database has access control objects that collectively store information that specifies access rights by users to specified sets of the managed objects. The specified access rights include access rights to obtain management information from the network. An access control server provides users access to the managed objects in accordance with the access rights specified by the access control database. An information transfer mechanism sends management information from the network to a database management system (DBMS) for storage in a set of database tables. Each database table stores management information for a corresponding class of managed objects. A set of views limits access to the management information stored in the database tables. Each view defines a subset of rows in the database tables that are accessible when using this view. The set of database table rows that are accessible when using each view in the set corresponds to the managed object access rights specified by the access control database for at least one the users. A view access control means specifies which views in the set of views are useable by specified ones of the users. The database access engine accesses information in the set of database tables using the set of views such that each user is allowed access only to management information in the set of database tables that the user would be allowed by the access control database to access.

摘要： A computer system having data organized in files, having a secondary storage for storing files, having a primary storage, and having one or more types of subsystems (file system implementations) for controlling transfer of files between primary storage and secondary storage. A subset of writes to secondary storage are performed using a Delayed Ordered Write (DOW) subsystem, as shown in the figure, which makes it possible for any file system to control the order in which modifications are propagated to disk. The DOW subsystem (30) consists of two parts. The first part is a specification interface, which a file system implementation or any other kernel subsystem can use to indicate sequential ordering between a modification and some other modification of file system structural data. The second part of DOW subsystem is a mechanism that ensures that the disk write operations are indeed in accordance with an order store. DOW improves computer system performance by reducing disk traffic as well as the number of context switches that would be generated if synchronous writes were used for ordering.

摘要： The apparatus and method of the present invention provides even loadsharing of round-robin querying of replicated databases in a network architecture which responds to network conditions. The network architecture utilizes a round-robin routing table that includes correlated index numbers, point codes and addresses of the replicated databases. The network architecture responds to incoming queries with searching of the round-robin routing table by incrementing to a successor index number and an associated point code. The network architecture may further determine whether the database at the address pointed by the point code is accessible. If not, the network architecture increments to another successor index number to locate an accessible database. When an accessible database is found, the point code is set to the address of the accessible database and the query is forwarded to that address.
