摘要： The present invention provides a method of forming a medical device and medical devices which can be formed in accordance with the method. In one embodiment, the method includes the steps of: a) providing a metal fabric formed of a plurality of strands formed of a metal which can be heat treated to substantially set a desired shape; b) deforming the metal fabric to generally conform to a surface of a molding element; c) heat treating the metal fabric in contact with the surface of the molding element to substantially set the shape of the fabric in its deformed state; and d) removing the metal fabric from contact with the molding element. The resulting metal fabric will define a medical device which can be collapsed for passage through a catheter or the like for deployment in a channel of a patient's body. Medical devices made in accordance with this method can have varying structures. In one embodiment, the medical device (250) is carried by a guidewire (260) and has a metal fabric (270) extending between first and second ends (272, 274), one end (274) of the device (250) being adapted to slide along the guidewire (260). The metal fabric (270) has a collapsed configuration in which the ends (272, 274) of the metal fabric (270) are spaced from one another along the guidewire (260) and a preset expanded configuration in which the ends (272, 274) of the metal fabric (270) are positioned closer to one another. The metal fabric (270) will cause the device (250) to elastically substantially resume its preset expanded configuration when released from confinement within a channel in a patient's body.

摘要： A thrombus filter which can be securely fixed at a selected location in the vascular system of a patient and removed when no longer required. The thrombus filter includes a body portion and a plurality of struts, each strut having a joined end and a free end. The joined end of each strut is fixably attached to the body portion. The struts radiate outwardly from the body member such that the thrombus filter is generally conical in shape. The free end of each strut includes an anchor member. A weakened portion is disposed proximate the free end of each strut. When removal of the thrombus filter is desired, forces are applied to the thrombus filter causing the struts to break at the weakened portions proximate the free ends. When breaking of the struts has been accomplished, the thrombus filter may be freely pulled into the lumen of the retrieval catheter. Once the thrombus filter is disposed inside the lumen of the retrieval catheter, the removal of the thrombus filter from the body of the patient becomes a simple matter of withdrawing the retrieval catheter from the blood vessel.

摘要： Self-expandable, woven intravascular devices for use as stents (both straight and tapered), filters (both temporary and permanent) and occluders for insertion and implantation into a variety of anatomical structures. The devices may be formed from shape memory metals such as nitinol. The devices may also be formed from biodegradable materials. Delivery systems for the devices include two hollow tubes that operate coaxially. A device is secured to the tubes prior to the implantation and delivery of the device by securing one end of the device to the outside of the inner tube and by securing the other end of the device to the outside of the outer tube. The stents may be partially or completely covered by graft materials, but may also be bare. The devices may be formed from a single wire. The devices may be formed by either hand or machine weaving. The devices may be created by bending shape memory wires around tabs projecting from a template, and weaving the ends of the wires to create the body of the device such that the wires cross each other to form a plurality of angles, at least one of the angles being obtuse. The value of the obtuse angle may be increased by axially compressing the body.

摘要： This is a surgical device usually delivered through an intravascular catheter. It may be used in several ways. It may, for instance, be used to open a clear passageway adjacent thrombus to allow both blood and medication to bypass the clot. It may be used to pierce and to remove thrombus. These thrombus are often found in tortuous vasculature. The device includes several sections. The device has a core element, typically a core wire. Placed around the distal end of the core element is a collapsible but preferably self-expanding proximal cage assembly and a distal filter, preferably a self-expanding cage assembly or other filter component. The various portions of those components are preferably radio-opaque. The proximal end of the proximal cage is typically affixed to an actuator in such a way as to allow expansion of the cage after deployment. The proximal cage assembly may be used for collecting emboli or for displacing them to allow blood flow to resume, either with or without concurrent clot-dissolving drug treatment. The distal sector, whether a self-expanding cage or fan, is placed distally of the thrombus to collect portions of the thrombus which may loosen during the treatment or removal procedure.

摘要： A shunt and method of use for maintaining distal blood flow during an arteriotomy procedure is disclosed. The shunt includes a first tubular member (10) having a proximal end adapted to receive blood from a first region of an artery. A distal end is adapted to release blood into a second region of the artery. The shunt includes a second tubular member (14) having a lumen which either merges and communicates at its distal end with a lumen of the first tubular member, or rides separate and parallel to it. The shunt is secured to the lumen of the artery. A blood filter device (41, 42) is deployed within the artery. The proximal opening of the shunt is inserted into the first region of the artery, and secured to the lumen of the artery. Endarterectomy is performed on the artery and embolic material dislodged during the procedure is captured by the filter.

摘要： This is an implant for placement in the human body and an assembly for so placing that implant. Most desirably, it is an implant for use in the vasculature of the human body and is used to occlude some space in that vasculature as a portion of a treatment regimen. The implant itself is preferably a component of a deployment device using an electrolytically severable joint. The implant is electrically isolated from the electrolytically severably joint by a highly resistive or insulative layer. Such isolation and minimization of the conductive pathway from the placement apparatus to the body's fluids appears to enhance the susceptibility of the electrolytic joint to quick erosion and detachment of the implant from the deployment media. Although the implant itself is preferably a vaso-occlusive device, it may instead be a stent, a vena cava filter, or other implant which may be installed in this manner.

摘要： This invention is a modular blood filter device (10) and delivery system, comprising an arterial cannula (20) with a modular filter device (10). The arterial cannula (20) includes a distal end (24) adapted to enter an artery, and a side port (32) for receiving a modular filter cartridge (42). The modular filter cartridge (42) includes a tubular cartridge (42), and a shaft (62) having a handle (68) on one end and an expandable filter device (60) on the other end. The expandable filter device (60) includes filter mesh (80) and an expansion frame (72) capable of assuming enlarged and contracted conditions. The shaft (62) is inserted into the cartridge, thereby containing the expandable filter device (60) therein. The cartridge (42) may be then removably received by the side port (32) on the cannula. The cannula (20) may be introduced into a blood vessel, and the expandable filter device (60) may be deployed through the cannula (20) into the vessel. The expansion frame (72) may be expanded to the enlarged condition to capture embolic material in the mesh (80), may be collapsed to the contracted condition, and may be removed from the vessel. The modular filter cartridge (42) may be removed from the cannula (20), and a new modular filter cartridge (42) may then be received therein.
