    • A compact high efficient air heater (10) providing improved comfort regulation. The air heater includes a cross-flow type heat exchanger (18) formed from a plurality of stacked corrugated plates (58a and 58b) which define a plurality of alternating flue gas passages and air passages and which include a plurality of modified air passages which provide increased air flow through the heat exchanger along the flue gas inlet side (66) whereby increased heat transfer along the flue gas inlet side is accomplished. The air heater also includes a plurality of bypass channels (72) which direct air flow across at least one surface of the combustion chamber (14) to remove heat from the combustion chamber housing, to lower the temperature of the flue gases entering the heat exchanger, and to reduce the temperature gradient at the air outlet side (64) of the heat exchanger.

    • The present invention provides an electrical connector for connecting a contact pad of an IC card to a printed circuit board. In particular, a smart card connector is provided which elevates the connector above the PCB for placement of additional components therebeneath. The connector includes a housing having a top component and a bottom component affixed thereto wherein the top and bottom components together define a card insertion ingress at a front portion of the connector. The ingress is sized and shaped to accommodate linear sliding insertion of a smart card therein along a card insertion plane defined between the top and bottom portions. The top portion of the connector supports a plurality of electrical contacts therein wherein each contact includes an inner extent having a spring-like undulation at a freely deflectable extent positioned in the card insertion plane. Upon card insertion, a contact pad on the card engages the freely deflectable extent such that the undulation moves upward into a corresponding indentation defined along a bottom surface of the top portion of he connector. Upon retraction of the card, the undulation resiliently returns to its original position in the card insertion plane. Each contact further includes an outer extent that protrudes normally from the top portion of the connector for termination to the PCB. The contacts are desirably distributed in even and aligned rows that enable placement of all contacts in the top portion of the connector.

    • An adjustable two-piece clip for mounting an object such as an electrical box on a stud is provided which comprises a first clip part engageable with the stud for securement of the clip to the stud; a second clip part engageable with the first clip part for holding the object on the clip; and at least one support member extending between the second clip part and a surface of the stud for substantially preventing flexing of the clip and inward movement of the object when a force is applied generally inwardly of the object. Also, the leg of the second clip part may be slidable relative to the leg of the first clip part lengthwise of the leg of the first clip part thereby enabling selection of a position of the object being held by the second clip part relative to the stud. In a preferred embodiment, the clip includes adjustment members with tabs on their distal ends for adjusting the relative position of the legs and for holding the first and second clip parts together during initial assembly.

    • The present invention provides a method of hermetically sealing an electrochemical cell (10). In the disclosed method, a coating of an adhesive composition is applied to an external metal tab (30, 30 1 ) that serves as a contact lead from the cell (10) to a device within which the cell (10) is employed. The adhesive coats and hermetically seals the tab surface thereby. The coating process can be executed by directly heat-sealing an adhesive film onto the tab surface. Alternatively, an aqueous suspension of the adhesive composition can be sprayed onto the tab surface, or the tab may be roll coated in the composition and thereafter subjected to heat treatment, causing the adhesive to melt and flow. The coated tab (30, 30 1 ) is thereafter welded to a corresponding current collector in the form of a metal foil. The complete cell assembly (10) is heat-sealed in a final closure sealing member (16) such that the sealed tabs (30, 30 1 ) extend therethrough.

    • An improved modular telephone-style jack featuring a guidance system positioned on the lower outer wall so that the guidance system maintains the position of the surface mount solder tails of the contacts of the jack in a controlled fashion. The guidance system consists of a series of substantially linear, parallel ridges which extend outward from the outer wall so that the peak of each ridge is in contact with or immediately adjacent the upper surface of a printed circuit board.
The peak of each ridge extends along the upper surface of the printed circuit board for a length that is greater than the length of the solder tail to provide alignment of each solder tail with its corresponding solder paste connection area. Each ridge prevents any solder tail from pivoting such that it could accidentally make contact with either neighboring solder tail. Each ridge further prevents the distance separating neighboring contacts from being reduced to such a small distance that solder could bridge across both contacts. This substantially reduces the risk of an electrical short between two separate signal paths which would render the soldered board unusable with a resultant high scrap cost with the loss of all soldered components.
The peak of each ridge further serves to prevent migration and wicking of the solder paste for two separate circuits from joining to each other, thereby shorting the electrical connection between the two separate signal paths. This condition would also render the board unusable.
The combination of features of the guidance system allows the solder tails to be formed so that no portion of the solder tail extends beyond the rear wall of the jack. This reverse gull wing configuration of the solder tail provides significant protection of the solder tails as a result of being located entirely under the lower wall of the jack so that the solder tails are not exposed to bending or twisting as normally occurs with j type or gull wing type solder tails or with other solder tail types which extend beyond the main rear wall of the jack.
