    • A composite barrel for a firearm and method for forming by forging. The barrel includes at least two materials joined together by forging. In a preferred embodiment, at least one material is preferably lighter in weight than the other material. The barrel may include an inner tube and an outer sleeve. The inner tube defines a bore that provides a bullet path and in one embodiment may be made of steel or alloys thereof. The outer sleeve surrounds the inner tube and in some embodiments may be made of aluminum, titanium, or alloys of either thereof. The tube preferably includes an exterior surface containing recessed areas therein for receiving material displaced from the outer sleeve by the forging process. The preferred barrel forming method generally may include inserting the tube into the sleeve, striking an outer surface of the sleeve, and deforming the sleeve to force material to flow into the recessed exterior surface of the tube to bond the tube and sleeve together. The method of forming may be used to produce long and short barrels for rifles and handguns respectively, and more broadly to produce other composite components unrelated to firearms.

    • An autoloading pistol (20) with a magazine disconnect mechanism that blocks discharge of the pistol when the magazine (440) is removed by action upon the pistol's firing pin (130). The pistol may generally include a removable magazine (440), a housing defining a chamber (48) to hold a cartridge (50), and a firing pin (130) movable towards the chamber (48). The magazine disconnect mechanism includes a blocking member (400) which may be movably disposed in the housing, and is movable into and out of engagement with the firing pin. In one embodiment, an actuator may be provided that controls the position of the blocking member and is movable in response to the insertion and removal of the magazine from the pistol. The actuator in a possible first position disengages the blocking member from the firing pin when the magazine is inserted in the pistol to allow the pistol to be discharged. The actuator in a possible second position engages the blocking member with the firing pin when the magazine is removed from the pistol to prevent the firing pin from moving forward toward the chamber. In one embodiment, the actuator may be an ejector (420) that also ejects spent cartridges from the pistol after discharging the pistol.

    • A pistol including a mechanism that locks manual safety of the pistol. The lockable manual safety mechanism may include a manual safety that engages the firing apparatus of the pistol to prevent discharge of the pistol when the trigger is pulled. The firing apparatus may include a trigger (40), trigger bar (50), sear (60), and hammer (70) that contacts a firing pin which may strike a chambered cartridge. The manual safety (80) may be movable into and out of engagement with the firing apparatus. In one embodiment, the safety (80) engages the sear (60) to prevent the sear from moving and releasing the hammer while held in the cocked position by the sear. In one embodiment, the manual safety (80) is a lever that is pivotally mounted to the frame of the pistol. The pistol may further include a locking member (100) that engages the safety. The locking member may be movable from an unlocked position in which the manual safety is freely movable, to a locked position engaging the manual safety so that the safety cannot freely move and is locked into engagement with the sear while the hammer is held in the cocked position by the sear. In one embodiment, the locking member may be a lock pin that may be rotatably carried by the pistol.

    • A mechanism for indexing the movement of a firearm cylinder to load and unload cartridges from a plurality of cartridge-receiving chambers in the cylinder (5). The firearm may generally comprise a cylinder (5), a supporting structure (3) rotatably carrying the cylinder and a loading gate cutout (42). The indexing mechanism may comprise a cylinder indexing member, which in one embodiment may be a stop pin. The cylinder (5) is configured to be stoppingly engaged by the indexing member (30) when the cylinder is rotated in a first direction to align a cartridge-receiving chamber with the loading gate cutout (42) in the frame, thereby creating an indexed position of the cylinder. Preferably, a plurality of indexed positions are created to allow each chamber to be aligned with the loading gate cutout for loading and unloading cartridges. In one embodiment, the cylinder is further freely rotatable in a second direction opposite the first direction without stopping engagement between the cylinder and indexing member. The mechanism may further include a pawl (13) which is moveable into and out of engagement with the cylinder for advancing the cylinder as the firearm is discharged.
