The electrical marking device (25) may comprise at least one layer functioning as a display layer (102) that is partially visually altered to provide a display of information, such as to display the subject matter and name of the content of the data and the amount of memory storage that has been used. The display layer (102) comprises a plurality of information storage elements (26), each representing the value of at least one data bit, wherein the visual appearance of each of the information storage elements (26) is varied depending on the value of the data bit.

摘要： A holographic recording and reproducing apparatus preforms to record data on a recording medium and reproduce data from the recording medium. The recording medium is made of a photorefractive crystal having a parallel plate shape. The apparatus includes: a support portion for detachably supporting and rotating the recording medium; a recording-reference-light-beam-supplying-portion for supplying a coherent recording reference light beam propagating along an optical axis to a major surface of the recording medium; a signal-light-beam-supplying-portion for supplying a coherent signal light beam which is modulated in accordance with image data, in an optical path into the recording medium such that the signal light beam intersects with the reference light beam to produce an optical interference pattern with the reference and signal light beams within the recording medium; a reproducing-reference-light-beam-supplying-portion for supplying into the recording medium a coherent reproducing reference light beam propagating in an opposite direction along the optical axis of the recording reference light beam to generate a phase conjugate wave from a refractive-index grating of the light interference pattern; a splitting portion for splitting the phase conjugate wave from the optical path of the signal light beam to image a dot pattern with the phase conjugate wave; a photo-detecting portion for detecting the dot pattern imaged with the phase conjugate wave to reproduce the image data.

摘要： Excitation of a triad artificial photosynthetic reaction center consisting of a porphyrin (P) convalently linked to a fullerene electron acceptor (C60) and a carotenoid secondary donor (C) leads to the formation of a long-lived C.+-P-C60.- charge-separated state via photoinduced electron transfer. This reaction occurs in a frozen organic glass down to at least 8 K. At 77 K, charge recombination of C.+-P-C60.- occurs on the νs time scale, and yields solely the carotenoid triplet state. In the presence of a small (20mT) static magnetic field, the lifetime of the charge-separated state is increased by 50 %. This is ascribed to the effect of the magnetic field on interconversion of the singlet and triplet biradicals. At zero field, the initially formed singlet biradical state is in equilibrium with the three triplet biradical sublevels, and all four states have comparable populations. Decay to the carotenoid triplet only occurs from the three triplet sublevels. In the presence of the field, the S and T¿0? states are still rapidly interconverting, but the T+ and T- states are isolated from the other two due to the electronic Zeeman interaction, and are not significantly populated. Under these conditions, recombination to the triplet occurs only from T0, and the lifetime of the charge-separated state increases. This effect can be used as the basis for a magnetically controlled optical or optoelectronic switch (e.g. AND gate).

摘要： The invention includes a method of manufacturing a fluorescent 3-D optical memory device implementing an active medium capable of storing information at high information density, and an optical memory device manufactured by this method. The active medium employed in the present invention is a material capable of existing in at least 2 isomeric forms. Transition from one form to another can be induced upon illuminating this material by a "writing" electromagnetic radiation having a first spectrum. At the same time the other isomeric form is capable of fluorescence upon illuminating this material by a "reading" electromagnetic radiation with a second spectrum. By virtue of illuminating with a radiation having the first spectrum there are created elemental cells within a medium material, containing substantially the same isomeric form thereof, which can be either that form which is capable of fluorescence or the other one which is not. The information is stored within the medium as numerical values associated with the amount of one of the isomeric forms of active medium contained within elemental cells distributed within the active medium.

摘要： Feedback is employed in a holographic memory system to facilitate rapid access to information in a stored data page. This feedback technique provides compensation for thermal, optical and/or mechanical variations in the system components that tend to interrupt the projection of a data page image on a sensor array. A page indicator or mark is stored in a holographic storage medium with a page of data such that, during playback, a quality, e.g., intensity, of its projected image is indicative of the quality of the corresponding projected data page image. A corresponding page indicator sensor is employed with the associated sensor array to detect the quality of a projected page indicator image. The projected data page image can then be read by sensor elements of the detector based on the detected quality of the page indicator image. Such a detector can be implemented in an active pixel sensor (APS) array with the page indicator sensor being implemented as a region of the APS array. Registration of the sensor array elements with respect to projected data pixels of the data page image can also be aligned to an absolute or substantially nearest pixel alignment by a similar feedback technique.
