摘要： A major problem with solid-state laser gyroscopes is that the optical cavity is by its nature very unstable. According to the invention, this instability may be reduced by the introduction of controlled optical losses into the cavity (1), dependent on the direction of propagation, by means of providing an optical unit comprising a polarising element (71), a first element with a reciprocal effect (7), acting on the polarisation of the waves and a second element with a non-reciprocal effect (8), also acting on the polarisation of the wave, whereby at least one of the two effects is variable and said losses are electronically controlled to follow the intensity difference between the counter-propagating effects. Several devices are disclosed using either fixed reciprocal effects and variable non-reciprocal effects or vice versa. Said devices are of application to monolithic cavity lasers and in particular lasers of the Neodymium-YAG type as well as lasers with a fibre cavity.

摘要： A discontinuous phase element (86, 204) is disposed between the reflector (20, 23) elements of an optical resonator in order to suppress unwanted modes propagating within the cavity, and to preferentially allow the existence of preferred modes within the cavity. The discontinuous phase element (204) operates by producing sharp changes in the phase distribution of the undesirable modes, so that their propagation losses are sufficiently high prevent their build-up. This is achieved by introducing a discontinuous phase change to these modes at locations where they have high intensity. At the same time, the desired modes suffer 0 or 2 pi phase change, or have low intensity at the discontinuity, and so are unaffected by the discontinuous phase element. Such elements can be used in a single element or a double element configuration, and can be used in passive cavities or active cavities, such as lasers. In addition to being able to improve the output beam quality of a laser by encouraging output of the lowest order mode beam, they can also be used to improve the maximum power output of solid state lasers by encouraging the output of specific higher order mode beams, without limiting dynamic range of the laser. They can also be used to compensate for birefringence distortion in the gain medium.

摘要： A method of operating a laser to obtain an output pulse having a single wavelength, comprises inducing an intracavity loss into a laser resonator having an amount that prevents oscillation during a time that energy from the pump source is being stored in the gain medium. Gain is built up in the gain medium with energy from the pump source until formation of a single-frequency relaxation oscillation pulse in the resonator. Upon detection of the onset of the relaxation oscillation pulse, the intracavity loss is reduced, such as by Q-switching, so that the built-up gain stored in the gain medium is output from the resonator in the form of an output pulse at a single frequency. An electronically controllable output coupler is controlled to affect output pulse characteristics. The laser acts a master oscillator in a master oscillator power amplifier configuration. The laser is used for laser peening.

摘要： A fiber-optic laser source (10) capable of emitting one useful wavelength at a given time, electrically step-tunable (30) to the grid wavelengths, is disclosed. The laser (10) preferably comprises a diode-pumped rare-earth doped fiber amplifier as gain medium, a periodic filter (20) to define grid laser wavelengths, and a tunable filter (30) step-tunable to any wavelength defined by the periodic filter (20). The arrangement is enclosed in a ring single mode optical fiber resonator. The ring resonator may be made, in part or in total, with polarization-maintaining optical fiber. The resonator also comprises in-line optical isolators (100, 110, 120, 130), to ensure unidirectional operation and to eliminate undesired reflections. A polarization controller (140) and polarizer device and a gain flattening filter (90) may also be included within the resonator depending upon the desired output characteristic of the laser (10). The laser (10) may be designed to operate in single cavity longitudinal mode. The disclosed fiber-optic laser (10) may also comprise output wavelength (160) and/or power (170) definition and stabilization control.

In one embodiment laser light of differing polarisations pass along respective paths and a pulsed laser output is generated via an electro-optical element. In another embodiment light of differing polarisations passes in differing directions through a cylical path. The invention can make use of a prism-shaped polariser having a polarisation selection face and two further faces. Yet further initial pulses can be controlled to reduce energy for example by progressively increasing the period or amplitude of successive pulses. As a result an efficient and high power laser apparatus is realised.
