    • A root crop harvester 8 (Figure 2) includes a preliminary topping device 13 followed by a topping assembly 11. Assembly 11 comprises a transversely disposed rotary device 18 including a number of skewed crown-engaging cutter bars 108 for removing skin from the crowns of crop partially topped by device 13. The topping assembly 11 is followed by a lifting device 12 for the topped crop. In alternative embodiments, the skewed straight edged cutter bars 108 are replaced by less skewed or axially parallel cutter bars having their cutter edges shaped so as in operation of the device to give the same effect as bars 108.

    • Endoprosthetic bone joint devices commonly comprise one or more components having one part adapted for securement with a bone of the joint and another part adapted for mutual articulatory engagement with another such component or natural integer of the joint. This invention provides such a component which is substantially wholly porous, but in varying manner with greater porosity in the one part than the other part. This variation preferably involves pore diameters in the one and other parts within respective ranges from 10 to 250 (Alpha) and substantially zero to 150 (Alpha). Also, the component is preferably made of fibre reinforced material with the reinforcement conforming to a predetermined pattern, a suitable material being carbon - fibre - reinforced carbon.

    • An apparatus to convey items for sorting into two or more classes for quality, appearance and the like. One or more wands for use by operators to indicate an item to be sorted in a specific way are movable, over a support surface to convey the items, to the proximity of the item to generate a signal. The signal is picked-up by a matrix of beneath the surface to produce a signal from which the position of the item indicated can be derived. The signal, which is conveniently of two components are represented lengthwise and the other crosswise position on the support surface, is compared with a falling ramp signal. The signal picked-up by the matrix part nearest the wand, and thus the indicated item. is the largest and will be the first to equal the value of the falling ramp and thus identify the position of the item. This position is supported to means to control the discharge of items from the support surface so that indicated items can be selectively discharged as appropriate.
