    • A method of measuring the amount and type of foreign matter in a fibre assembly by scanning the assembly with a video camera and allocating a brightness or colour value to each pixel of the scan. The scanning preferably occurs with transmitted light. The number of pieces of foreign matter being detected by allocating a count to each group of adjacent pixels in excess of a predetermined value or a colour corresponding to a predetermined colour. The type of foreign matter being determined by scanning the image of each item of detected foreign matter and calculating a shape factor relative to each item then comparing each shape factor with predetermined shape factors calculated for known types of foreign matter.

    • A method and apparatus for the reduction and fuming of tin concentrates, tin slags and other tin bearing materials in a closed submerged arc furnace provided with a stirrer which acts to stir molten slag in the furnace to produce a vortex acting to transfer hot slag from the vicinity of the tips of the furnace electrodes to the vortex region, the furnace being constructed to permit carbonaceous material to be fed into the region of the vortex and to enable gas to be taken off from the furnace to a gas cleaning system. The apparatus is provided additionally with a gas inlet in the vicinity of the vortex region and a secondary combustion chamber in which gas from the furnace Is oxidised and thereafter returned to the furnace, the object of the invention being to obtain high thermal efficiency, high metal recovery, efficient reagent utilisation and a minimum of gaseous pollution emission.

    • 57 A communications system suitable for use as a local area network (LAN) is provided wherein the network has a ring topology comprising a plurality of nodes 10 each of which is connected to adjacent nodes by links 14 and 15. Each node comprises a Link Interface Unit (LIU) 11, a Network Interforce Unit (NIU) 12 and a Terminal Interface Unit (TIU) 13. By providing forward and reverse links 14, 15 between nodes the system is capable of reconfiguring itself after link or node failure such that the failed equipment can be bypassed to minimise system disruption. Link Interface Units (LiU) 11 are also capable of bypassing their own node if a node failure is detected. System control is decentralised with each active node contributing to system control such that prime-failure sites are avoided. System protocol depends upon a token passing scheme where only the node 10 currently holding the token is entitled to transmit data and once it has finished its transmission the node 10 passes the token to the next node 10 in the ring. The system operates under a strict timing regime wherein a system cycle of substantially fixed period is established and the first rotation of the token around the ring during the system cycle is used to initiate transmission of the highest priority data with subsequent rotations of the token initiating transmission of data of progressively lower priorities. Accordingly, the timeslots available for transmission of each data type have variable- boundaries determined by the sytem load.
