摘要： This invention relates to a polygonal turning insert having primary cutting edges (12), which individually include a nose edge (14) and two main edges (15), which converge toward the same. Behind the nose edge, chip-directing guide surfaces are formed, viz., on one hand, a breast surface (24) included in a knob (20) situated behind the nose edge along a bisector between the main edges (15), and, on the other hand, a pair of flank surfaces (21) included in a land being behind. According to the invention, at a distance behind the knob (20), there is formed a second breast surface (25), the upper part of which is situated on a higher level than the upper part of the first breast surface (24). In such a way, it is guaranteed that thin chips, which tend to pass or jump over the first breast surface without being affected by the same, will impinge on the second, higher breast surface and be subjected to guiding by the same.

摘要： A rhombus-shaped cutting insert has opposing upper and lower surfaces, and a peripheral side surface extending therebetween having alternating obtuse and acute corner surfaces separated by four relief surfaces. The cutting insert is removably secured in an insert receiving pocket of a tool holder and indexable about a central axis. A nose cutting edge is formed at the intersection of one of the upper and lower surfaces with each of the two acute corner surfaces. One of the upper and lower surfaces has an engagement surface having a single primary and four secondary engagement elements. The primary and secondary engagement elements or portions thereof, exhibit mirror symmetry about primary and secondary engagement planes. The primary engagement plane contains the central axis and intersects each nose cutting edge, and each secondary engagement plane does not contain the central axis and forms an acute engagement angle with the primary engagement plane.

摘要： In a cutting tool having an indexable cutting insert with exactly four cutting portions, the cutting insert is removably securable to an insert holder by a fastener. The cutting insert has two opposing end surfaces with a peripheral side surface extending therebetween, and each cutting portion has a major cutting edge formed by the intersection of a rake surface and a relief surface. The peripheral side surface has first and second pairs of opposing side surfaces which include the four relief surfaces and the four rake surfaces, respectively. In an end view, four cutting points on the four major cutting edges define the transitions between the first and second pairs of opposing side surfaces, and a minimum first length dimension between the second pair of opposing side surfaces is less than six-tenths of a minimum second length dimension between two of the four cutting points.
