    • A print hammer construction (10) comprising a base portion (12), a print hammer arm (14) carrying an armature (30) adjacent one end thereof, and a hinge portion (16) joining the arm (14) with the base portion (12) so as to enable the arm (14) to pivot with respect to the base portion (12). The base portion (12), arm and hinge portion (16) are integrally formed of the same material, such as moulded plastics material, to form a one-piece unit. The base portion has a solenoid (50, 56, 58) secured thereto to cooperate with the armature (30) to move the other end (18) of the arm into printing relationship with a record medium (25) when the solenoid is energized and a spring (40) returns the said other end against a stop (42) when the solenoid is deenergized.

    • An impact printer with a hammerbank having print hammers retained by a permanent magnet (82) for impacting a print ribbon, and a mechanical driver for moving the hammerbank across print media. First and second coils (98, 100) for each hammer are wrapped around first and second pole pieces (84, 86), one of which is asymmetrical to the other pole piece. One of the pole pieces (84) can have a generally elongated longitudinal form with the coil (98) wound around the longitudinal form. The other (86) can have a generally arcuate form, with the coil (100) wrapped on a portion between the ends thereof. The coil (100) wrapped around the arcuately formed pole piece (86) is thicker than the coil (98) wrapped along the longitudinal pole piece (84). The result is to provide pole pieces and coils for an impact printer having differing spatial relationships that can be staggered, or formed asymmetrically for more compact coil and pole piece placement to improve printer efficiency.

    • A line printer has a hammer bank (10) for printing on media with print hammers (16) with printing tips which impact a ribbon to form a dot matrix array. Permanent magnets retain the hammers (16) magnetically and coils release the hammers (16) by overcoming the magnetism to impact a platen against which the hammer printing tips can strike a ribbon and an underlying medium. A cover (120) overlies the hammers (16) and is secured to the hammer bank (10) by threaded members. The cover (120) has at least one elongated ridge (180), (182) and a hammer bank mask (130) which is secured to the cover (120). The provision of the cover (120) improves operation of the hammer bank and its resulting printing.

    • A dot matrix printer having a plurality of hammers on a hammerbank with a counterbalance for the hammerbank in adjacent parallel relationship to the hammerbank.     • A hammer control system for a band printer has a micro-processor (12) receiving character information and having an address (ADR) and a data bus (BUS) output together with a timing output. The microprocessor controls an optioning scheme used in the printer. A decoder (16) is connected with the address output of the microprocessor and a print line buffer (20) provides a stored print data output for subsequent comparison and printing connected with said decoder. A compare circuit (22) receives the output of the print line buffer and receives data from the microprocessor. A shift register (28) receives a compare signal from the compare circuit and a shift control signal from the microprocessor. A hammer driver device (30) causes printing to occur in response to the output of the shift register.
