    • A cylinder liner (1) for an internal combustion engine has a piston (5) which is movable in the liner in the longitudinal direction between a bottom dead centre at which scavenging air ports (8) in the wall of the cylinder liner are exposed above the top surface of the piston (9), and a top dead centre at which the piston is in its top position in the cylinder liner. The piston is provided with several piston rings (19, 21-23), the outer surfaces of which slide along the inner surface (13) of the liner. The cylinder liner is provided with several recesses (25) in its inner suface, said recesses being positioned opposite the top piston ring when the piston is at the top dead centre. In the longitudinal direction the extent of the individual recesses (25-27) is at least twice the height of the top piston ring (19). The recesses serve as gas flow connections between the spaces above and below the piston ring when it is positioned opposite the recesses.

    • A cylinder liner assembly (10) for an internal combustion engine (12) is disclosed. The assembly (10) includes a cylinder head (16), a cylinder block (18) defining a top deck surface (26) and a cylinder bore (28) extending from the top deck surface (26), and a cylinder liner (30) mounted in the cylinder bore (28). The cylinder liner (30) includes a flanged end (32) extending over the top deck surface (26) of the cylinder block (18). A hardened annular deck plate (24) is provided about the cylinder bore (28) between the flanged end (32) of the cylinder liner (30) and the cylinder block (18) to prevent cracking of the cylinder block (18) when the flanged end (32) is clamped between the cylinder head (16) and the cylinder block (18). The hardened annular deck plate (24) has a hardness in the range of about 25 to about 60 on a Rockwell "C" scale, and preferably about 50 on a Rockwell "C" scale.

    • An internal combustion engine block (10) having a circumferential channel (34) formed between the cylinder block (10) and a cylinder liner (14), surrounding and adjacent to the high temperature combustion chamber region of the engine, to which coolant flow is diverted from the main coolant stream to uniformly and effectively cool this critical area of the liner. The high velocity flow of the main coolant stream, as it passes the end of the cylinder liner adjacent the combustion chamber provides a reduced pressure head at the port interconnecting the outlet end of the circumferential channel with the main coolant stream. Channel entrance holes (36), located upstream at relatively stagnant regions in the main coolant flow, are at a higher pressure head than the channel exit port (38), thus inducing flow through the channel at a high velocity flow.
