    • A gas-turbine engine combustion system has a combustor with a burner head having both pilot gas and pilot liquid-fuel injection arrangements, the pilot gas arrangement comprising an annular gallery communicating with a downstream face of the head and a deflecting arrangement adjacent the gallery for directing the pilot gas-fuel towards a longitudinal axis of the combustor and over a central part of the downstream face. The combustion system is designed so that, during both gas- and liquid-fuel operations, the flame front face is located close to the burner head and, during liquid-fuel operation, air is forced across the downstream face to cool the head. Advantageously, the cooling air is made to replace the pilot gas-fuel in the annular gallery, so that it is deflected, like the gas-fuel, and contacts the central part of the downstream face. The burner head also features main gas and liquid-fuel injection arrangements, these communicating with one or more passageways in a radial swirler attached to the head.

    • In an electric power generation system (20) which includes a turbine (22) and a turbine generator (25) connected to the turbine (22) along a common shaft (21), an alternating current (AC) induction exciter (30) is provided which is connected to the turbine generator (25) for starting the turbine generator (25). The AC induction exciter (30) preferably includes an AC input (31), an exciter rotor (36), and a stationary alternating current output provider (35) responsive to the AC input (31) and positioned in electrical communication with the exciter rotor (36) for providing an alternating current output (34) to the exciter rotor (36) so that a voltage is generated regardless of the speed of the exciter rotor (36). The stationary alternating current provider (35) preferably includes a rectifier (32) responsive to the AC input (31) for rectifying the alternating current to a direct current (DC) and a DC-to-AC converter (33) responsive to the rectifier (32) for converting the direct current input to an alternating current output (34). A method of starting a turbine generator (25) is also provided.

    • A variable length pre-mixer assembly comprises an upstream end for receiving compressed air from a compressor and a downstream end disposed in flow communication with a combustor. Pre-mixer assembly comprises an upstream forward clamp, a swirler assembly having a plurality of circumferentially spaced apart vanes disposed adjacent the upstream end for swirling compressed air channeled therethrough. An elongate centerbody has a first end joined to and extending through the swirler and a second end disposed downstream therefrom. A downstream fuel nozzle shroud has an outlet in flow communication with the combustor. Additionally, at least one removably disposed fuel nozzle spacer is alternatively disposed between a first position between the upstream forward clamp and the swirler assembly and a second position between the swirler assembly and the downstream fuel nozzle so as to change the relative position of the swirler assembly and alter the pre-mixer assemblies acoustical resonance characteristics.

    • A fuel flow control system for directing fuel within a combustion engine having a plurality of fuel introduction nozzles arranged in a plurality of operationally-distinct groups is disclosed. The system includes a plurality of pumping assemblies each corresponding to one of the nozzle groups. Each pumping assembly includes several fuel motivation elements, each in fluid communication with a fuel supply and a corresponding one of said nozzles. Drive elements, such as variable speed motors, are operatively associated with the pumping assemblies, and direct the motivation elements to transmit fuel to the nozzles. A control assembly independently controls the drive elements, so that fuel flow to each nozzle group is independently controllable. In one embodiment, the motivation elements in each pumping assembly are mechanically linked and operate as discrete groups of elements, thereby delivering uniform fuel flow to each nozzle within a given group of nozzles.
