    • An apparatus for perforation of wellbore walls, which apparatus includes a fiber optic cable having a laser input end and a laser output end. A laser source is operably connected to the laser input end and a laser head is connected to the laser output end. The laser head includes a laser control components for controlling at least one laser beam characteristic. Laser head control elements for controlling the motion and location of the laser head are operably connected to the fiber optic cable. The laser head is enclosed in a protective housing, which protects the fiber optic cable and elements, such as reflectors and lenses for controlling the laser beam emitted by the fiber optic cable disposed therein, from the harsh environments encountered in downhole operations.

    • The reference member provides a permanent reference for the depth and orientation of all well operations and includes a body with an engaging surface for an attaching engagement to the interior surface of an existing casing in a borehole and an orienting surface for orienting well tools within the cased borehole. No sealing engagement is required with the casing. The engaging surface on the body has a first non-engaged position where the engaging surface does not engage the casing and an engaged position where the engaging surface does engage the casing which causes adequate engagement between the body and the casing to permanently dispose the well reference member within the casing. The well reference member further includes an actuation member for actuating the engaging surface from the non-engaged position to the engaged position. The actuation member may be an expansion member which expands the body having an engaging surface into engagement with the casing or which expands engaging surfaces, reciprocably mounted on the body, into engagement with the casing.

    • The present invention relates to an apparatus for dropping a ball into a wellbore. The apparatus is particularly useful for dropping a ball that has a diameter that is larger than the diameter of a bore within a wellbore tool above the apparatus. The ball-releasing apparatus first comprises a tubular body. The tubular body has a bore therethrough that is in fluid communication with the bore of the wellbore tool. A piston is placed within the tubular body. The piston has a top end disposed within the tubular body, and a bottom end disposed below the bore of the wellbore tool. The ball-releasing apparatus further comprises a connector for releasably connecting the piston to the ball. In one arrangement, the ball-releasing apparatus is connected to the bottom of a wiper plug for dropping a ball during a wellbore cementing operation. In one aspect, the ball is dropped by dropping a second ball having a diameter that will pass through the wellbore restriction, and then injecting fluid under pressure against the second smaller ball in order to actuate the releasable connection.

    • An improved method for drilling a lateral well from an existing wellbore is disclosed whereby a section of said existing wellbore is preferably enlarged such as by under-reaming. The enlarged section is filled with a material such as, for example, epoxy which hardens to form an impermeable body. The hardened material is drilled out laterally and also longitudinally, such that a sealed junction is formed within the impermeable body between the lateral well and existing well. In one embodiment of the present invention, a packer positioned within the enlarged may be filled with the material to thereby avoid any contamination of the material with other downhole elements such as mud and oil whereby the composition of the material is consistent and known. In one embodiment, a drillable guide may be positioned in the enlarged section prior to filling the enlarged section with material to thereby subsequently guide a drill bit through the hardened material for reestablishing a path within the existing wellbore.

    • The present invention generally relates to downhole tools. More particularly, the invention relates to a locking mechanism for use on a downhole tool. A flow actuated locking mechanism is provided for a downhole tool that includes an annular, two-position sleeve having an unlocked position and a locked position. A pin assembly within the tool is used to retain the sleeve in the locked position. In one aspect of the invention, the locking mechanism is used on a reaming tool with extendable cutters that are extendable from the body of the tool to increase the diameter of the tool and aid in forming a wellbore therearound. The locking mechanism prevents the cutters from collapsing or closing as the reamer is moved axially in the wellbore.
