摘要： Scintillator compositions having a garnet crystal structure useful for the detection of high-energy radiation, such as X, &bgr;, and &ggr; radiation, contain (1) at least one of terbium and lutetium; (2) at least one rare earth metal; and (3) at least one of Al, Ga, and In. Terbium or lutetium may be partially substituted with Y, La, Gd, and Yb. In particular, the scintillator composition contains both terbium and lutetium. The scintillators are characterized by high light output, reduced afterglow, short decay time, and high X-ray stopping power.

The plastic articles produced from the compositions of the invention exhibit a remarkably rich, attractive, clear, brilliant fluorescent daylight color and a strong, long-lasting glow-in-the-dark luminescence having a color similar to that of the daylight color.

The scintillator material has a cubic garnet host, and has praseodymium as an activator. The scintillator material may be a polycrystalline ceramic material. The polycrystalline ceramic is formed by sintering a powder formed by precipitation. The scintillator material may be integrated into computed tomography (CT) equipment or other x-ray imaging equipment. The scintillator material may also be integrated into a fast response x-ray detector system.
