    • The invention relates to a separate insertion chute (103) of the type which at spaced intervals are connected to an underground suction conveying conduit (106) communicating with a refuse suction system, the upper end above ground of each chute being provided with a closable insertion opening and the lower end below ground of each chute being connected to the suction conveying conduit. According to the invention the insertion chute (103) consists of an upper chute portion (103a) which at its lower end is provided with a connecting flange (108a), and a lower chute portion (103b) which at its upper end is provided with a connecting flange (108e), said lower chute portion (103b) being received in a branching (109) extended from the suction conveying conduit (106), said branching likewise being provided with a connecting flange (108g) at its upper end. The connecting flange (108e) of the lower chute portion is releasably clamped between the flange (108a) of the upper chute portion and the connecting flange (108g) of the branching and the branching (109) has such a length in relation to the depth of the suction conveying conduit (106) below the ground surface, that the flange joint (108) formed by the connecting flanges (108a, 108e and 108g) is positioned above the ground surface.

    • A waste removal device is described. The device is in the form of a pair of hinged jaws (11, 12) where the jaws (11, 12) have a generally stirrup shape in order to provide a dual purpose device which may be used to remove waste (31) from a surface (32) as well as to provide a leash handle for use in restraining an animal. When used as a waste removal device, the jaws (11, 12) are opened and placed inside a plastic bag (30). The plastic bag (30) is then placed over the waste (31) on the surface (32) and the jaws (11, 12) closed, thus surrounding the waste (31). The bag (30) is then turned inside out enclosing the waste (31) inside the bag (30). In the leash application, the jaws (11, 12) are closed and the ends of the stirrup shaped members (25, 26) may be used as a hand grip whereby a leash (17) is attached at the opposite end. The device may be further adapted so that a waste bag storage means is located in one of the jaws (11, 12) whereby the bags (30) stored therein are accessible when the jaws (11, 12) are opened and when the jaws (11, 12) are closed, the bags (30) are securely constrained in a recess (40) formed by the two jaws (11, 12). Potential applications include primarily pet uses - i.e. for removing pet waste as well as leash device for a dog or similar animal.

    • In a ship there are provided a plurality of refrigerated cells (10) in which fly ash or other powdery refuse is mixed with water; the temperature being progressively lowered in the refrigerated cell until the mixture changes state from substantially liquid to solid, i.e. to ice; the walls (18) of the refrigerated cell (10) are then successively heated in order to melt the ice layer which adheres thereto; finally, a lower door (13) of the cell (10) is opened to cause the ice block to fall into the sea. The ice block must be such as to sink without dissolving even to a minimum extent during its fall towards the sea bed, so as not to spread the fly ash through the entire surrounding sea. In order to attain this, the weight of the quantity of fly ash, present in unit volume of the mixture, must be in such a ratio that the weight of the volume of liquid displaced during the fall of the block towards the sea bed is less than the weight of the block itself.
