    • A serial impact printer of the type which utilizes a rotating print element (36) is driven by a main drive motor (20) which is arranged off the carriage (37) which translates the print element (36) along a printing path. The housing of the motor (20) is mounted so as to be movable, and preferably rotatable, and is connected to the print element (36) by an extendable shaft (21) and a flexible transmission element (24). Print speed is improved by utilizing the flexible transmission element (24) as a universal drive arrangement having a constant velocity characteristic. Thus, a servomechanism which controls the angular orientation of the print element (36) need not be unlocked as the drive angle is varied. A ribbon supply arrangement (101) has a portion which is installed at least partially on the motor (20) and is rotatably coupled to the print carriage (37). The ribbon supply arrangement (101, 104, 105) performs as a motor guide which adapts the rotational orientation of the motor housing (20) to the changing location of the print carriage (37). Thus, the bulk of the weight of the ribbon supply arrangement (101) and of the motor (20) is borne by structure which is off the print carriage (37).

    • Apparatus is disclosed for controlling the movement of a movable element (20 or 22) between an initial starting position and a final stopping position. The apparatus comprises drive means (34 or 36) coupled to the movable element and responsive to motor drive signals for moving the movable element (20 or 22) along a predefined path between the starting and stopping positions. The apparatus generates an actual velocity signal indicative of the actual speed of movement of the movable element, a position signal indicative of the distance remaining to travel by the movable element toward the desired stopping position and first and second command velocity signals respectively indicative of the minimum and maximum desired velocity levels for such particular distance remaining to travel. A controller (26) is responsive to the position signal for comparing the actual velocity signal with each of the first and second command velocity signals when the value of the position signal indicates the movable element has greater than a predetermined distance to travel, and for issuing the motor drive signals in response to such comparison for application to the drive means (34 or 36) to cause (a) the acceleration of the movable element (20 or 22) by the drive means when the comparison indicates the actual velocity of the movable element is less than the minimum desired velocity, (b) the coasting of the movable element when the comparison indicates the actual velocity of the movable element is more than the minimum desired velocity and less than the maximum desired velocity, and (c) the deceleration of the movable element by the drive means when the comparison indicates the actual velocity of the movable element exceeds the maximum desired velocity.

    • An electronically controlled token engraving apparatus, wherein a slide (21) including a token-receiving aperture (33) moves blank tokens from a blank token receiving station (15) to an engraving station (17). At the engraving station (17), a typehead (19) comprising a plurality of radial type bars (135) is manually rotated by an operator until the desired character type is located above the upper peripheral edge of the token. Thereafter, actuation of a switch (S2) causes a toggle press (105) to press the end of the type bar (135) and, thus, the type downwardly against the token causing a character to be engraved therein. Just prior to a character being engraved, the token is indexed a predetermined distance. After a character is engraved, the typehead (19) is again manually rotated until the next desired character type is located. This sequence is repeated until all of the desired characters, up to a maximum number, are engraved. Subsequent to the last character being engraved or, when the maximum number of characters have been engraved, a further switch (S3 or 209) is actuated to eject the engraved token and to place another blank token in the engraving station (17). Digital logic systems (211, 203, 213) control movement of the slide (21), the toggle press (105) and the release of a hold down mechanism (83). Digital logic systems (205, 215) further control a counter (G13), which controls a suitable alphanumeric display (213, 233), an out-of-service indication, and machine shutdown to prevent operation of the token engraving apparatus if the mechanical mechanism thereof becomes jammed, or runs out of blank tokens.
