    • A lead-free solder characterized as comprising 0.1 to 2 wt % of Cu, 0.002 to 1 wt % of Ni with the residue being Sn. The solder preferably contains Cu in an amount of 0.3 to 0.7 wt %, and more preferably it contains Cu in an amount of 0.3 to 0.7 wt % and Ni in an amount of 0.04 to 0.1 wt %. The solder can be prepared by adding Ni to a molten mother alloy of Sn-Cu, or by adding Cu to a molten mother alloy of Sn-Ni. A lead-free solder which further comprises 0.001 to 1 wt % of Ga is also disclosed. The lead-free solder can form a solder joint having a high strength and stability comparable to those of a conventional Sn-Pb eutectic solder.

    • A novel multiple spot laser welding apparatus includes a bendable mirror capable of deformation, which receives a laser beam at a single reflective surface thereof. A deformation device deforms the single reflective surface of the bendable mirror to provide a plurality of laser sub-beams to a workpiece, generating laser spots on surfaces thereof. The apparatus can be used in a laser welding method that provides a common weld pool formed by laser spots transverse to the weld seam. Another laser welding method provides multiple laser spots oriented along a weld seam producing a common weld pool therebetween. Still another laser welding method provides multiple laser spots along a weld seam producing distinct weld pools.

    • An underwater cutting tool for steel, concrete, or the like, comprising a tubular oxygen lance (10) adapted to be connected to an oxygen source (24, 25) and having a pistol grip-like handle (16).Prior to its first use the lance is sealed so as to be ignited safely under water. This seal (12) is adapted to be blasted off or fused by means of an igniter unit (14) which is operable under water, at the same time, firing the oxygen flowing out of the lance (10).
