    • An apparatus for forming a spread of generally thin, pliable material from a roll (R) onto a table (50) includes a cradle for holding the roll which is selectively operable to rotate the roll for feeding the material generally forwardly from the roll. An endless conveyor including a series of flights spaced at intervals therealong with openings (32) between the flights is driven for forward travel, and the web from the roll is received on and carried forward by a flight in the upper reach of the conveyor. A knife (64) is operable to cut the web to separate a first sheet (SH) from the roll. The first sheet is thereafter held from forward movement with the supporting flight by grippers (70) selectively operable for gripping the first sheet on the supporting flight. Thus, the supporting flight slides out from under the first sheet with the first sheet falling onto the table.

    • Sheet materials in the form of optionally flawed remnants with non-repetitive shapes, e.g. hides (10), are cut by digitising the geometry of each remnant, arranging the pieces to be cut out of the remnant, and cutting pieces out of the remnant according to the resulting arrangement. The surface of the remnant (10) is provided with indicia indicating at least the position and orientation of the remnant during the digitising process. The indicia are sensed to determine and record position data representing the positions of the first indicia. In a cutting station (300), images of the indicia positioned according to the first recorded position data are projected onto a work surface, and the corresponding remnant is placed thereon so that the indicia on the remnant surface match the projected images thereof, whereafter said pieces can be cut out of the remnant which now has a position and orientation similar to those it had during the digitising process.
