SOLUTION: An expandable reamer includes a cannulated shaft and a plurality of straight cutting blades having deformable points. The blades are hingedly outwardly rotatable at the deformation points between a contracted position and an expanded position. In the contracted position, the blades are substantially parallel to the longitudinal axis of the cannulated shaft and, in the expanded position, the blades have at least a portion oriented radially outward from the longitudinal axis, thereby forming a larger diameter cutting surface in the expanded position than in the contracted position. The blades are formed from a portion of the cannulated shaft by, e.g. milling longitudinally extending slots through the wall of the cannulated shaft, the slots serving as flutes dividing the cutting edge and trailing edge of each adjacent blade. 摘要： PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method and apparatus for performing minimally invasive total hip arthroplasty. SOLUTION: In the method and apparatus for performing minimally invasive total hip arthroplasty, an approximately 3.75-5 centimeter (1.5-2 inch) anterior incision 44 is made and the femoral neck is severed from the femoral shaft and removed through the anterior incision 44. The acetabulum is prepared for receiving an acetabular cup through the anterior incision, and the acetabular cup is placed into the acetabulum through the anterior incision 44. In one exemplary embodiment, a posterior incision 46 of approximately 2-3 centimeters (0.8-1.2 inches) is generally aligned with the axis of the femoral shaft and provides access to the femoral shaft. In this embodiment, preparation of the femoral shaft including the reaming and rasping thereof is performed through the posterior incision 46, and a femoral stem is inserted through the anterior incision 46 for implantation in the femur. SOLUTION: To position a femoral implant, an incision is made along the greater trochanter. Since surroundings of the greater trochanter are not covered with muscles, the incision is made and the wound developed through the skin and fascia to expose the greater trochanter, without incising muscle. After exposing the greater trochanter, a new instrument is utilized to form a cavity in the femur extending from the greater trochanter into the femoral head and further extending from the greater trochanter into the intramedullary canal of the femur. After the femoral cavity is formed, a femoral implant is inserted into the cavity in the femur. The femoral implant is thereafter secured in the femur, with a part of the implant extending to and secured in the femoral head and with a part of the implant extending to and secured in the femoral shaft.
