摘要： A computer accessible medium comprises instructions which, when executed, receive a request to allocate one or more blocks for a file. At least one allocation policy is assigned to the file, wherein the allocation policy specifies one or more storage units on which the blocks are to be allocated. Additionally, if more than one storage unit is specified, the allocation policy includes a control indication indicating a mechanism for selecting among the storage units. The instructions, when executed, may also allocate blocks according to the allocation policy. In another implementation, a computer accessible medium comprises instructions which, when executed receive a request to allocate one or more blocks for a file in a filesystem and allocate blocks according to an allocation policy. Allocation policies are specifiable at two or more levels of granularity in the filesystem.

Embodiments of the temporal volume manager may provide an interface that allows applications and/or application agents to communicate with the temporal volume manager to manage and keep track of the temporal information on one or more temporal volumes. 摘要： A system uses a protocol stack in a card external to a motherboard in a target computer system. A processor on the motherboard is able to make use of the external protocol stack during boot-up of the computer, or at any other time, so that it is not necessary to load the protocol stack into the motherboard's memory. This saves time, memory, and disk space and permits an external, managing, computer system to communicate with a computer just after power-up without loading and configuring a protocol stack so the managing computer system can control the boot-up of the target computer system. The extra memory saved, especially, is important in running many MS-DOS applications, such as firmware flash utilities. A preferred embodiment of the invention uses a UDP/Internet Protocol (UDP/IP) stack resident in a Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) on, e.g., a network card. The approach described herein can be applied to other utilities, protocol stacks or resources (hardware and software) on other cards.

摘要： Methods and systems to bridge storage management software are provided. A first storage management application communicates with a host and performs an analysis of a storage environment associated with the host. The first storage management application uses the analysis to determine if a storage resource interface is controlled by a second storage management application, and if so a plugin application is accessed by the first storage management application to permit the second storage management application to perform a storage management operation on behalf of the host. In one embodiment, the analysis is updated by the first storage management application upon receiving results from second storage management application, where the results reflect the processing of the storage management operation by the second storage management application.
