    • 1335257 Mixed copper soaps TENNECO CHEMICALS Inc 17 May 1971 [1 June 1970] 15217/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C5] Oil-soluble copper mixed soaps of two structurally different saturated or unsaturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acids, for example straight chain, α-, #-, γ-, 8- substituted branched chain acids, are prepared by simultaneously reacting copper or a copper compound with the acid-group containing compounds. Copper acetate, or sulphate may be used and the acidgroup containing compounds may be acids or salts. Many suitable acids are listed and examples describe the use of 2,2-dimethyl pentanoic and 3,5,5-trimethyl heptanoic; 2- ethyl-4 methyl pentanoic and 3,5,5-trimethyl hexanoic; 4-ethyl-5,5-dimethyl hexanoic and 3,5,5-trimethyl hexanoic; n-nonanoic and 3,5,5- trimethyl hexanoic; 2-ethyl-2-hexenoic and 3,5,5-trimethyl hexanoic; 4-ethyl-5,5-dimethyl hexanoic and 2-ethyl hexanoic; n-nonanoic and 2-ethyl hexanoic; 4-methyl pentanoic and nhexanoic; 4-methyl pentanoic and 3,5,5-trimethyl hexanoic; 2-ethyl butanoic and 3,5,5- trimethyl hexanoic acid mixtures in the preparation of the soaps and of mixed copper 3,5,5- trimethyl hexanoate and copper 4-ethyl-5,5- dimethyl hexanoate or copper nonanoate, or copper caprylate/n-nonanoate soaps. The salts may be dissolved in mineral spirits, a non-polar hydrocarbon solvent or a chlorinated non-polar hydrocarbon solvent and mixed with a fuel oil as a soot-remover additive.

    • 1365695 Mixed calcium salts TENNECO CHEMICALS Inc 26 Oct 1971 [1 Dec 1970] 49670/71 Heading C2C [Also in Division C4] Mixed calcium salts of at least one branchedchain olefinically-unsaturated or saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid (6-18 C), all of the acid being branched at the same chain position, and a minor molar proportion of calcium salt of at least one olefinically unsaturated or saturated aliphatic monocarboxylic acid dissolved in an organic solvent may be used as stable drying agents for paints or stabilizers for synthetic resins. The acid forming the second salt when aliphatic is branched at a different chain position from the first salt and such different chain position is either a branch in the α-position, two branches in the α-position, or a branch at #- or a further removed position relative to the carboxylic group. The salts may be of 2-ethylbutanoic, 2-methylpentanoic, 2-ethyl-4-methylpentanoic, 2-propyl heptanoic acids and 2- ethyl-hexenoic acids, mixed trialkyl acetic acids with 9-11 C, and 10 C atoms, 2,2-dimethylpentanoic, 3,5,5-trimethyl hexanoic, 3-ethyloctanoic, 3-methylhexanoic, 4,5-dimethyl hexanoic, 4-ethylnonanoic and the C 8 , C 10 and C 13 oxo acids. Inert organic solvents are listed, and the salts may be prepared separately and mixed or prepared in situ. Additives such as alkyl and phosphates and polyoxyalkylene glycols may be present. Examples describe mixtures of calcium salts of 2-ethyl hexanoic acid and naphthenic acid, oxo C 8 acid and naphthenic acid, mixed trialkyl acetic acids and oxo C 8 acid, 2-ethylhexanoic and 3,5,5-trimethyl hexanoic acid, 2-ethyl hexanoic and mixed trialkyl acetic acid, trialkyl acetic acid and napthenic acid, and 2-ethylhexenoic and naphthenic acid in solvents.

    • 1520363 Cleaning the interior of hollow vessels TENNECO CHEMICALS Inc 7 April 1976 [21 April 1975] 14127/76 Heading A4F [Also in Division B2] To clean the interior of a vessel such as the hold or storage tank of a ship or a chemical reaction vessel 1, apparatus is used comprising a doubleacting piston/cylinder device 14, 25 mounted on the exterior of the vessel, a fluid supply tube 30 secured to the piston 25 and passing through the piston and through an annular seal 15 in the cylinder 14, fluid delivering tube 31 extending through a seal 60 into the supply tube 30, and a rotatable, e.g. an orbiting nozzle 35 attached to the end of the tube 30 to spray a fluid such as water. Conduits 16, 19, connected via three way valves 17, 20 with either a source of pressurized fluid, e.g. nitrogen, or a discharge, are connected to the cylinder 14 on opposite sides of the piston. To clean the vessel 1, the nozzle 35 is lowered by operating the valves 17, 20 to supply pressurized fluid to upper face 26 of the piston and to discharge fluid from below the piston via a throttle valve 24 which can be set to control the rate of movement of the piston and thus of the nozzle. Reversal of the positions of valves 17, 20 is effective to raise the piston 25. The apparatus may be automatically operated by using magnetic limit switches 28,29 actuated by a ferrous part of the piston 25. The cleaning fluid used may be recycled via a reservoir 23. Although the apparatus is shown mounted vertically on the vessel 1, other orientations are possible
