Envelope control signal lines (41) are originated from the data input motherboard (28) and allow selection between signals representing the positive peaks, the negative peaks and the input waveform itself.     • A bidirectional data communications distribution network is established between the system operations center (SOC) and customer terminals of a load management and electrical energy distribution system. The distribution network comprises independent processor controlled, primary communications interface units (PCI) in communication with the SOC over telephone lines or other medium. Each PCI is in turn in communication with a plurality of independent processor controlled, secondary communications interface units (SCI) over electrical utility primary distribution power lines. Signals between PCIs and SCIs on the primary distribution power lines are code division multiplexed using direct sequence spread spectrum (DSSS) signal processing. Each SCI continuously polls a number of assigned customer load terminals on the low voltage side of the electrical energy distribution system, storing and calculating meter register readings and load status.

    • Electricity meter fraud is detected by incorporating a undirectional cyclometer-type register into a meter. The register is actuated each time the meter and cover assembly (which is factory sealed) is removed from its associated socket by an actuating arm assembly which is in contact with the socket. In one embodiment the actuating arm includes a rod which protrudes through an opening formed in the base of the meter and is biaserd into contact with the socket so that when the meter is removed from the socket the register is actuated. Alternatively, the actuating arm is connected to a sliding-type meter terminal which is actuated upon insertion and/or removal of the meter base with respect to the socket. In a further arrangement, a switch is provided in the base of the meter and is arranged to energize a solenoid to actuate the register whenever the meter is removed from its socket. The register can include one or more drums, with the drums each having a plurality of markings provided thereon, such as the digits 0-9, indicative of the position of the drum. Upon the removal of the meter from its socket the register is actuated causing different markings to be displayed. The register drum is designed to rotate in only one direction and jams upon reaching a predetermined position so that the markings originally displayed by the register cannot be brought back into view by a person who has fraudulently removed the meter from its socket.

    • A virtually frictionless bearing element for use in a tape transport is formed from a piezoelectric material, with the tape being disposed proximate a surface of the piezoelectric bearing element. An ultrasonic signal (approximately 70 KHz) is applied to the bearing element causing the piezoelectric material to expand and contract at the signal rate. The vibrations cause a thin film of air to be generated at the surface of the bearing element over which the tape can pass with virtually no friction or wear. Roller inertia and flutter which are associated with ordinary roller-type bearing elements are eliminated since the only moving part is the tape itself. The bearing element can also be combined with a magnetic transducer to form a frictionless magnetic record/reproduce head.

    • A liquid crystal display circuit (9) comprises a recirculating shift register (14) having serial input and output terminals for receiving and generating binary data in bit serial format and a plurality of intermediate parallel output terminals for coupling display data to a liquid crystal display (LCD) (10). Display data are loaded into the shift register (14) during a display update mode and recirculated for display by the LCD (10) during a data refresh mode. Loading and recirculation of display data are controlled by logic circuitry (16) in a feedback loop (15, 17) of the recirculating shift register (14). To minimize DC buildup on the LCD (10), data inversion provided in the feedback loop causes periodic polarity reversal of data during recirculation. In addition, a shift register reset circuit (28) monitors the continuity of data being supplied to the LCD (10) for display. The reset circuit (28) resets the shift register (14) in response to discontinuities in input data flow to further minimize DC buildup.

    • A liquid crystal display (1) operable in both ambient and artificially lighted modes includes an optically clear plate (3), a translucent plate (5), transparent character forming electrodes (11, 13) formed on facing portions of the plates (3, 5), and a liquid crystal material (9) sandwiched between the plates (3, 5). The translucent plate (5) is backlighted by an artificial illumination source (19) when ambient light is insufficient for viewing of the display (1). The translucent plate (5) is preferably formed from a material, such as milk glass, which is nonreactive with the liquid crystal material (9). The translucent plate (5) has a relatively smooth surface which acts as a diffuse reflector of ambient light, while transmitting diffuse artificial lighting when the display (1) is backlit. Since ambient light is reflected only from the upper surface of the translucent plate (5) which is substantially coplanar with the active portion of the display (1), viewing problems due to parallax are eliminated and character contrast is enhanced.
