    • A device configured to have a surface structure suitable for providing one or more tactile effects via electrosensory vibration. The surface structure includes a substrate, a charge dissipative layer, and an insulative layer between the charge dissipative layer and a body member of a user. The device includes a voltage source able to electrically charge the charge dissipative layer to an electrical potential that induces a capacitive coupling of the charge dissipative layer, across the insulative layer, to the body member of the user. The surface structure may additionally include one or more layers to obtain additional properties, such as hydrophobic properties, optical properties, scratch resistance, and anti-fingerprint properties. Any one or more of additional such layers may take the form of an internal or external coating on the substrate layer, the charge dissipative layer, the insulative layer, or any suitable combination thereof.

    • A haptic device may allow a user to explore the tactile sensations associated with information being displayed on a display. This methodology can be referred to as a "hold-and-feel" mode. The user may first perform a gesture to inform the device to hold the display stationary, in order to explore the information, instead of scrolling or panning the information on the display. For example, to enter the "hold-and-feel" mode, a user may press one finger on the side of the screen to lock the information content with respect to the screen so that the display contents are no longer moved as the user slides another finger over the screen. In a haptic device that supports tactile sensory stimulation, this "hold-and-feel" mode allows the user to feel one or more objects or elements (e.g., a link or image) on the screen, for example, as variations of surface texture.

    • An apparatus for presenting a time-variant information element in a vehicle, which has a steering wheel (1602), comprises one or more remotely and individually controllable tactile pads (1620), which produce a tactile sensation in response to a respective pad output signal, which is produced by a controller (CTRL).
